My family’s holiday was ruined after we were bitten by BED BUGS at four-star hotel

A British family was horrified after their dream holiday in Mallorca turned into a bedbug-infested nightmare.

Gary Turner, 57, and Jutta Turner, 55, suffered from being eaten by swarms of leeches over eight nights in a four-star hotel in Puerto Pollensa.

Gary had an allergic reaction to the blanket of bedbug bites on the back of his head, which ended with an ambulance ride to the hospital and a painful emergency shot to the buttocks.

The couple were also stunned when Tui offered them just a 10 percent discount on one of the two rooms they booked with their two adult daughters as compensation after being confronted.

They were offered an alternative offer of 20% off their next holiday with Tui, but this was rejected and Gary and Jutta demanded a full refund of the trip.

“We paid for a four star plus hotel with good reviews and we never expected to sleep eight nights with bed bugs,” Gary told the Olive Press.

“We never expected to suffer like this, this is not what we paid for.”

The Turners arrived at the Hotel Illa D’OR with their two daughters at the end of March, anticipating a relaxing 10-day holiday in the sun.

But when Jutta and Gary started noticing bites on their hands and heads after the third night, they assumed they were just mosquitoes.

It wasn’t until a week after the holiday that the couple turned on the light in the bedroom at 3 a.m.

To their undying horror, they saw dozens of tiny brown bed bugs crawling all over the cloth headboard and even the sheets they slept in.

But the nightmare had only just begun for the British-German couple.

The hotel’s apologetic staff immediately brought bug spray and moved the couple to another room where the bed had a wooden headboard.

According to their account, Gary and Jutta couldn’t sleep at night because of the itching, while exposure to the sun caused the bites to flare up.

And the medicines they got at the pharmacy – for which the hotel paid – made them sleepy.

But worst of all, the drugs also prevented them from enjoying an alcoholic drink while on vacation.

“It all left us feeling tired, exhausted and exhausted,” said Jutta.

“We couldn’t enjoy our holiday at all.”

A dispute soon broke out with both the hotel and Tui, the tour operator, over the amount of compensation owed to the Turners.

The hotel only offered “a spa treatment or a ride on their boat.” This offer was also rejected.

Gary and Jutta requested two free rooms for two weeks in October as compensation.

The pair have also gone to great lengths to ensure they don’t bring bedbugs back to the UK, including throwing their suitcases out and packing their clothes in a giant freezer.

“The only good thing was that our daughters weren’t in that room or we could have taken one of them back in a coffin if she’d had the same reaction as my husband,” said Jutta.

“She is disabled and immunosuppressed due to a kidney transplant.”

“The whole experience left us completely exhausted and stressed, due to the lack of sleep caused by constant itching and getting quite paranoid about checking our bed for bugs in the hotel in the middle of the night,” added Gary.

“We were also exhausted by the annoyance and dismay caused by the indifference and lack of compensation offered to date by the hotel and TUI.”

A spokesperson for Tui told the Olive Press: “We recognize that some services fell short of our generally high standards.

“We would like to reassure all customers that we regularly check all our hotels for health and safety, including hygiene.

“Although the family was offered compensation during their stay, they unfortunately declined it.”

Meanwhile, Hotel Illa D’OR called the Turners’ request for a free two-week vacation in October “unreasonable.”

While they did not deny the presence of bed bugs in the room, they said they “would not succumb to pressure from a guest seeking free accommodation.”

“We want to emphasize that our hotel takes pest control very seriously and we have contracted a company to provide preventive and control services,” they said in an email to the Olive Press.

“None of their reports have found the presence of bed bugs in our hotel.

“In addition, the room in which the guests stayed was previously occupied by other guests without any complaints.”

Gary has begun the torturous process of filing a legal claim with Tui.
