Alexander Isak’s stunning run to set up Jacob Murphy could be the best Premier League assist EVER

Joe Willock’s “assistant of the century” hasn’t stood the test of time. Four days even. The owner of that grandiose title, albeit one of their own club, is now his Newcastle teammate, Alexander Isak.

Ironically, Isak was the beneficiary of Willock’s 50-yard pass in Sunday’s 6-1 win over Tottenham. That ball won from Luka Modric.

Now, after another Newcastle themed episode of Premier League Years, it’s Isak who has drawn the resemblance to Thierry Henry.

However, the Swede’s dribble against Everton looked more like a chase scene from Keystone Cops, and the boys in blue had to look just as hilariously incompetent.

Isak received the ball halfway. Ben Godfrey was initially ordered to put him under lock and key, but he ran off. Reinforcements arrived in the form of Michael Keane and Idrissa Gueye, and they at least managed to force their tormentor to the corner flag.

But no one corners Isak. By the time he was done with his would-be captors, it was they who were begging for mercy. He had twisted them so many ways that all that was left was a comical collision and a cloud of smoke.

Now for Godfrey, whose white flag was still visible at the edge of the penalty area. Intimidated by the humiliation of his comrades, he practically waved Isak through.

Jordan Pickford and James Tarkowski followed. They felt a surge of bravado as they attempted to apprehend the con man who had robbed others of their dignity. Soon they were scrambling for their own self-esteem as Isak dinked the ball between them and over the goal mouth.

As the credits rolled, Jacob Murphy scored into an open net. The goal, the cap of a 4-1 victory, was truly postscript.

But there we had it, the biggest assist the Premier League had seen since last weekend. However, this one was better. And indeed it brought back memories of Henry, the way Isak had stopped and started, dropped his shoulders and defenders, and showed a foot movement as sharp as his quickness of thought.

“I see the comparisons to Henry,” Eddie Howe said.

“Everyone is different, no two players are the same, but I think he has some of the characteristics that Thierry had. It certainly has the speed and has a similar build and frame.

“The footwork for the assist against Everton was really remarkable.

“The amount of twists and turns and transfers he did, an incredible feat of skill. He has incredible ball manipulation.’

Isak wears No. 14 because Henry was his idol. It’s a wise choice given compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s obvious temptation to worship.

However, Isak prefers to let his feet do the talking, and at the moment they are making a hellish noise. Howe’s belief is that the striker’s seven goals in eight games are just the beginning.

There is a sense that he may even be better than the player they thought they were signing in August for a club record £60 million from Real Sociedad.

“I think he has a lot of potential to improve and get better, but it’s been a great start for him,” said Howe. “I don’t think you ever know with absolute certainty how good a signing will be. Anyone saying that would be lying because until you work with a player and see them up close every day, you never really know what their true abilities are.

“But we’ve been very impressed with everything he’s delivered so far – not just technically on the pitch, but also his character and how he’s handled certain situations. He’s been first class.’

What should also serve as a warning to Newcastle’s rivals is that Isak wasn’t even in the starting eleven at Goodison Park. He and Callum Wilson have to share the center forward’s jersey. Wilson scored twice and the second of these, bent into the top corner from 20 yards out, was reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp.

There you have it – Wilson and Isak, Bergkamp and Henry. Newcastle United certainly have an invincible feeling at the moment.
