Man United injury update: Bruno Fernandes travels to London in huge boost for Erik ten Hag

Bruno Fernandes travels to London with the Manchester United side ahead of their clash with Tottenham…

  • Bruno Fernandes hobbled against Brighton on Sunday with an ankle injury
  • It was feared that the Man United star could be missing for some time
  • But Fernandes traveled to London ahead of their game with Tottenham

Bruno Fernandes has traveled to London with his Manchester United teammates for tonight’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur – despite fears the midfielder might miss the match.

Fernandes limped off in extra time during United’s penalty shootout win over Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday with an ankle injury, leaving him worried about joining the Spurs.

He was even pictured Monday in a protective boot with crutches at his side in a photo shared by his wife, Ana Pinho.

Erik ten Hag had said in his pre-match press conference that there was a ‘question mark’ over his involvement with London, but as a huge boost for the Red Devils, Fernandes was photographed with their team coach on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, when pressuring team news against Ryan Mason’s side, the Dutchman had said: “There are a few not available – (Lisandro) Martinez, (Raphael) Varane. We have to wait and see how Bruno Fernandes is doing, we don’t know yet.

“He’s a question mark. But other than that, I think we’re pretty okay.

β€œIt is more often that players, we protect them, prevention, but it has to settle down.

“We saw him play a full game and that happened in the first half. But tomorrow is soon, we have to see what is possible.’

Fernandes took a knock in the first half against the Seagulls at Wembley but played through the pain barrier before finally being replaced by Wout Weghorst after 101 minutes in United’s 7–6 penalty shootout win.

The Portuguese star – who has often acted as United’s captain this season as captain Harry Maguire struggled for playing time – has been an integral part of the Red Devils’ rebuilding under Ten Hag.

In total, Fernandes scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

Remarkably, he has only missed three games. Two for suspension against Sevilla and Aston Villa, while also resting for United’s 3–0 win over Charlton in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Several other United players were pictured getting into the coach ahead of their game against Spurs.

Antony and David De Gea both looked in good spirits as the players embarked on their journey to London, where they would fly down on the day of the match rather than the night before.

Elsewhere, Casemiro – who has recently returned from a four-match suspension for his second record of the season after being sent off against Southampton – seemed focused, as did Marcus Rashford.

United are currently in fourth place, five points ahead of Aston Villa in fifth, although they have played three fewer games than Unai Emery’s high-flying side.

Tottenham have fallen to eighth after this week’s results and are six points behind United after having played two games more.

Spurs have endured another chaotic week in a dismal campaign after interim boss Cristian Stellini was sacked following their 6-1 thrashing by Newcastle last Sunday, with former midfielder Ryan Mason stepping in for his second spell in the hotseat.

If United won in North London, they would open an eight-point lead over Villa and set foot in the Champions League for next season.
