Aston Villa are keeping a close eye on Giovani Lo Celso’s performances at Villarreal.

Lo Celso, loaned to Villarreal from Tottenham Hotspur, is a favorite of coach Unai Emery, having previously played for him at Paris St Germain and Villarreal last season.

The Argentine midfielder’s name was said to be one of the players discussed when Emery considered joining Newcastle United in 2021.

Lo Celso made a big impression against Sevilla on Sunday, switching between a false nine-roll and midfield. Tottenham would like to sell if they review their squad.

The 27-year-old has spent the past two seasons on loan at Villarreal, making 43 appearances in total, scoring twice.

He joined Spurs in the 2019-2020 season – initially on loan – before being made permanent in January of that season after impressing former boss Jose Mourinho.

Lo Celso’s performance then dipped, however, as he made just 11 Premier League starts the following season.

He would only make two starts in the 2021–22 season before being shipped off to Spain midway through the season.

Villa has also checked Valencia’s raucous but talented Portuguese midfielder Andre Almeida, as has Brighton. The 22-year-old, like everyone else in Valencia’s squad, is available at the right price.

Meanwhile, Nice is showing interest in Villa left-back Lucas Digne.
