Commenting on his absence, Maddison wrote on Instagram: “Sickness bug overnight. Devastated to miss today’s big game! Come on guys, we’ve got this.’

Leicester put together an attack-oriented line-up, with Jamie Vardy, Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho all starting.

The Foxes were beaten 3–1 by Manchester City in Smith’s first game in charge and went on to face Wolves after four successive league defeats.

Although Leicester have struggled this season, Maddison has made a big impression, scoring nine goals and providing six assists in 24 Premier League appearances.

England international Maddison has also occasionally captained Leicester this season.

Leicester are also without a host of other players, with Jonny Evans out sick, while James Justin, Ricardo Pereira, Harvey Barnes and Jannik Vestergaard are also sidelined.
