Arsenal ‘will have to do something miraculous’ to win the title, says Jamie Carragher

Arsenal ‘will have to do something miraculous… but the title race is still in their hands’ says Carragher – as Neville tells them to ‘pick themselves up for the game of their lives’ ahead of Manchester City

  • The Gunners saw their title dreams fade as they drew against Southampton
  • Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back from brutally assessing Arsenal’s chances
  • The former Liverpool defender said they need “something wonderful” now

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville didn’t hold back in their assessment of Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League.

The Gunners saw their lead at the top of the table shrink to five points after their disappointing 3-3 draw with Southampton on Friday night.

Mikel Arteta’s side fought back late to save a point of the game, but the result leaves them within reach of second-placed Manchester City, who have two games to go against the Gunners.

And after the game, co-commentators Neville and Carragher spoke out that the Gunners needed “something miraculous” to win the league title.

Neville told Sky Sports: “Arsenal got back into the game and they got a point out of it. The players need to get ready for the game of their lives at the Etihad.

“It’s not the result they wanted before the game, but it’s better than they could have hoped for with five or ten minutes left.

‘They’re still alive. It’s not over yet and still in the hands of Arsenal, but they have the huge task of going to powerhouse Manchester City on Wednesday.”

His co-commentator, Carragher, agreed, saying: “Whether the point makes that much of a difference to Arsenal, I’m not entirely sure.

“They probably have to go to Man City and take three points if they want to win the league.

“It’s still in Arsenal’s hands and we keep saying it, and it shows you how far ahead they were.

They’ve dropped six points in the last three games and it’s still in their hands.

“They had a pretty big lead, but between now and the end of the season they’re going to have to do something amazing.

“But we’ve seen them score points before, especially after losing to Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium. That was a big disappointment, but they won the next seven games.

“They now have six games to go and they will have to do something special to win between now and the end of the season.”

The Gunners suffered an early setback in the game when Carlos Alcaraz took advantage of a loose ball from Aaron Ramsdale to put the visitors ahead.

Former Arsenal star Theo Walcott then doubled their lead with a clean finish before Gabriel Martinelli fired back soon after.

Southampton then went ahead by two goals in the 66th minute after Duje Caleta-Car headed home from a corner and it looked like the Saints had secured a victory.

But Arsenal fired back in dramatic fashion as Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka both secured a point for the Premier League leaders.

The result puts them five points ahead of Man City, but Pep Guardiola’s side have two games to play and will face Arsenal in a crucial game on Wednesday night.
