House PASSES bill to ban transgender women and girls from sports teams
House passes bill to ban transgender women and girls from sports teams: NO
- Republicans say it’s about protecting women’s rights, while Democrats say it opens a new salvo to attack trans kids who are already being bullied
- “Anyone who grew up in the ’60s and fought for women’s rights should not fall into this trap,” says Rep. Carol Miller, RW.Va.
House Republicans on Thursday approved a ban on transgender women and girls from participating in female-school athletics in response to the Biden administration’s proposal to amend Title IX that would make it more difficult to exclude trans athletes.
No Democrats voted along with Republicans for the bill, which will not pass the Senate.
Republicans say it’s about protecting women’s rights, while Democrats say it opens a new salvo to attack trans kids who are already being bullied in school.
“Anyone who claims to be a feminist or believes in what feminism is based on should probably get behind us,” said Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, at a press conference.
‘This is a bad situation. Every day, whether it’s Lia Thomas… our women are physically unable to level the playing field when it comes to biological males competing,” House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik told AFP ahead of the vote. DailyMail.com
“Strong, raging leftists have perverted what should be a very simple subject,” she said. “I don’t care how many surgeries you have, I don’t care how the chemicals you put in your body. You don’t become a biological woman.’
“Anyone who grew up in the ’60s and fought for women’s rights should not fall into this trap,” says Rep. Carol Miller, RW.Va.
Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wisc., president of the Equality Caucus for LGBTQ rights, took a different view: “These kids are kids and should be able to play with their friends. This is not about protecting women and girls, it’s about attacking trans kids,” he tweeted.
“They don’t really care about women’s sports, but would rather bully trans kids and subject all girls to invasive physical inspections,” said Rep. Pocan in another tweet.
Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., said the bill was not an attack on trans people.
‘I’m a live and let live person. You can be whoever you want to be, if you want to be trans that’s your right. But what about my rights, what about my daughters’ rights?’
Republicans have put transgender athletes in the crosshairs of their culture war after University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, who had competed on the men’s swim team, switched genders and joined the women’s swim team.
She became the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming championship.

Since then, more than a dozen GOP-led states have enacted sports bans for transgender people. Republicans have also pushed forward a ban on gender transition care for minors.
Marjorie Taylor Greene joined the debate on Twitter: “Joe Biden and the Democrats want men to beat down women and girls by participating in women’s sports.”
Biden hit back with a proposal from the Department of Education that “categorically” excluding a transgender girl from female sports would make a Title IX violation.
However, it would allow universities and K-12 schools to exclude transgender women, allowing them to compete, which would undermine fairness or potentially lead to sports-related injuries.
Democrat leader Jeffries said the Republicans were smitten for focusing on culture war issues, unlike the House Democrats who are “focused on improving the lives of ordinary Americans.”
“They’ve decided they want to ban trans kids from playing sports,” he said. “They didn’t focus on the economy, not on jobs, not on health care, not on inflation, not on public safety.”
