US expat says roundabouts and no guns in retail stores would put Americans in a coma

An American woman has listed six strange and amazing things about Australia, including “the fact that you can’t just go to Walmart and buy a gun.”

Hannah Shuman, who lives in Sydney, said the comparisons between the two would put her fellow Americans “into a coma” in a social media video that went viral.

She cited roundabouts, speed cameras, air conditioning, lack of clothing on the farm and access to guns as huge differences that upset her.

The scintillating video post with a Sydney Harbor backdrop was titled, “Things in Australia that would put Americans in a coma.”

She kicked it off with an “I had to, you guys” intro, before putting one comparison at the top of her list.

“There’s no total ban on guns in Australia, so you can get one – but it’s so much harder than in America.”

She also couldn’t believe that Australia had a huge number of speed cameras monitoring motorists, as opposed to “roadside cops” in the US.

They just have cameras everywhere [in Australia] who catch you speeding and they automatically send you a speeding ticket,” Ms Shuman said.

The Florida native went on to mention two frustrating things about the land below compared to what she’s used to.

She was stunned that “central air” was not common in Australia, adding that not having air-conditioning was “unheard of” where she comes from.

“You’re lucky if you have central air conditioning and it’s probably in a newer building — but most places only have wall units or don’t have air conditioning at all,” she said.

“You can’t survive in Florida without air conditioning.”

The avid traveler said the lack of ranch dressing was also a problem for her, as she’s only been able to find a “watered-down version” of the real thing in Australia.

“It’s not ranch dressing,” Mrs. Shuman insisted.

But she praised the country’s “incredible” Medicare system, where “you don’t get a $1,000 bill in the mail.”

The post attracted a slew of online commenters saying “tough” Aussies don’t need air conditioning – they just need to “open the windows.”

Another corrected her use of vocabulary in Australia.

“We don’t call it “central air,” that just means it’s an air conditioner somewhere in the middle of the house. We call it ‘ducted air conditioning’.

Mrs. Shuman then agreed that’s what she meant, claiming, “I never see it!”

Ms Shuman also couldn’t believe Australia had heaps of speed cameras monitoring drivers, unlike ‘roadside cops’ in the US.

She said the lack of ranch dressing was also a problem for her, as she’s only been able to find a “watered-down version” of the real thing in Australia.

But others said the differences between the two countries were not that far apart.

“Believe me, we still have police on the side of the road and speed cameras.”

“We also now have cameras at most lights that will catch you not wearing a seatbelt or on your phone,” another added.

Some disagreed about the air conditioning, claiming it was everywhere down under, while others said it was a blessing not to have guns at the ready.

“It feels good to be able to go to school where the only fear is [that] you have a test,” said one commenter.
