Beloved Catholic priest and charity activist Father Bob Maguire has passed away at the age of 88.

It is understood that the self-described larrikin, known as Father Bob, passed away on Wednesday, according to sources close to the family.

Father Bob devoted his life to the Catholic Church and charitable work before earning a reputation as an outspoken commentator who was not afraid to speak his mind or call out church leaders.

The Catholic priest first became known for his work with underprivileged people in his parish in South Melbourne before appearing regularly in the national media.
