It comes on the heels of news that a streaming series based on the iconic 1999 teen movie Cruel Intentions is in the works at Amazon.
The film, starring Sarah, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe as ruthless Manhattan high school students, has become a cult classic since its release nearly 25 years ago.
According to TVLine, the project will enter production later this month, with physical production in Toronto.
Insiders stated that the show was in development for Amazon’s Freevee service, though it could potentially be moved to Prime Video.
Representatives from both streaming services declined to comment.
Cruel Intentions is based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
The film revolves around a pair of step-siblings who make a bet on someone’s ability to seduce one of their classmates.
In addition to the three protagonists, the film also starred artists such as Selma Blair and Joshua Jackson.
The film received mixed reviews from critics at the time of its original release, although it was a hit at the box office.
A pair of direct-to-video sequels, not featuring either cast member from the first film, were released in 2001 and 2004.
A jukebox musical based on the film debuted in 2015 and has since been reproduced several times.
A television pilot starring Gellar and serving as a sequel to the film was produced in 2016, though the project was ultimately not picked up by any network.

The actress previously spoke to The New York Times and said she was glad the pilot wasn’t brought to series.
She recalled, “On the first day I thought, ‘This isn’t working.’ It’s just not a network show. And if it’s a network show, it’s not my cruel intentions. So I was actually thankful.”
News about the development of the new version of the program was revealed to the public in 2021.
The streaming series Cruel Intentions currently has no set release date.
