Hugo Lloris was stunned to learn of Tottenham supporters turning on defender Davinson Sanchez as they crashed to beat at home to Bournemouth.

Sanchez came on as a substitute 10 minutes before the break with the Spurs leading 1–0, and was dragged off before the hour mark, after his mistake helped the visitors take a 2–1 lead.

While on the pitch he was booed, especially after his mistake led to Bournemouth’s second goal by Dominic Solanke, and there was loud cheering when he was replaced by Arnaut Danjuma.

“It started earlier, when he came onto the field,” captain Lloris told beIN Sports. “I’ve never seen this in my career. I feel very sorry for Davinson. He’s a teammate, he’s a friend and he’s been fighting for the club for many years, and it’s just sad.

“The story is sad for the club, for the fans, for the player. You don’t want to see that in football.’

Acting head coach Cristian Stellini sent Sanchez off when Clement Lenglet was injured and took him off for offensive reinforcements when he sent off winger Danjuma and switched to a back-four.

“I understand it’s a difficult moment for everyone,” said Stellini, who took responsibility for the chances and tried to explain why he sent in Sanchez instead of a more attacking player and then took him out.

“I thought it was early in the game to use more of a striker because it was the first half and we were one up, so I didn’t think it was the time to switch with a striker.

“After the game, when we were 2-1 down, I thought this was the time. Davinson needs to know it was just a tactical decision, but we have to support him because it’s a difficult moment for him and also for the whole team. So we have to create unity in our dressing room and between us, and we will succeed.’

Danjuma equalized for Tottenham in the 89th minute, but Bournemouth substitute Dango Ouattara scored the winner in the fifth minute of extra time.

Stellini said he would not hesitate to re-select Sanchez as Tottenham prepare for an important series of Premier League matches against Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool.

“If we need him, yes,” said the Italian. “He’s a professional player. We have to be strong for the team. But I repeat, if the team pushed more when we scored the first goal, we are here to talk about a different situation.

“It’s the mindset that needs to change, not just Davinson, it’s the whole team that can help, every player that came on the pitch.

“It’s a habit we have, it’s not the first time, it’s a long time we’ve been doing this. But we have to be perfect in the defensive situation. Today we weren’t so perfect because we let them score with two errors. This is a problem, it’s not a tactical problem, it’s an individual problem, a mistake.’
