The 33-year-old star – currently starring on the big screen as Dracula’s beleaguered assistant in Renfield – opened up to The protector about the great opportunities that have slipped through his fingers.
In an interview published Friday, the English actor revealed how he was forced to turn down the one and only Tom Cruise after the iconic star offered him a role in the two-part finale of Mission Impossible.
The seventh chapter in Cruise’s tentpole franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, is set to hit the box office this summer, and Hoult came very close to playing the villain.
The Mad Max: Fury Road star was cast as the film’s villain in January 2020, but was forced to drop out after contractual obligations for his popular Hulu show The Great conflicted with MI:7’s shooting schedule.

MI:7’s disappointment was compounded by the fact that it was missed opportunity number three in a trinity of big misses for Hoult.
The About a Boy star put his best foot forward to become the next Bruce Wayne, but another British star got ahead of him when Robert Pattinson was selected to be the caped crusader.
And MI:7 wasn’t the only Tom Cruise vehicle Nicholas tried to drive. The Favorite star made an attempt for a role in the mega hit Top Gun: Maverick last year, but was not cast.
“I did a screen test for Batman and didn’t get it,” Holt complained in his interview with The protector. “Screen tested for Top Gun, misunderstood.
“Then I got the call from Tom Cruise, ‘Hey, what about Mission Impossible? OK. Understood. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of The Great.’
Nicholas stars as Emperor Peter III in Hulu’s historical comedy satirizing the rise of Russia’s Catherine the Great, played by Elle Fanning.
He received critical acclaim for his performance, earning two Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination in the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category last year.
The third season of Hulu’s The Great will begin streaming on May 12 this year.

Holt is currently starring opposite living legend Nicholas Cage in Renfield, which has received great reviews.
Most of the praise is for Cage’s epic portrayal of Dracula, with some saying that Holt’s titular character has been relegated from Renfield to the shadows.
Nicholas recently shared some BTS photos from filming the movie after shutting down rumors that Cage had filed his teeth for the bloodthirsty role.
The Oscar winner has blamed his mouthful for his “icy” behavior on set and has denied the method during production.
