The Super Mario Bros. Movie becomes highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time after making over $500 million worldwide

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially become the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time.

The animated movie starring Chris Pratt has earned an impressive $508.7 million from global audiences since its release earlier this month, according to Variety.

The feature film, which was boycotted by John Leguizamo for not having Latin characters, has also become the highest-grossing film of 2023.

It was also reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had made $260.3 million from domestic audiences while bringing in another $248.4 million internationally.

The film has become the second-highest-grossing animated film since 2019, with only Minions: The Rise of Gru coming out on top.

An animated film adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. series had been in the works since the mid-2010s.

A live-action movie based on the franchise, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper, was released in 1993.

The feature received an overwhelmingly negative response upon its debut, though it has gained a cult following over the years.

Development of the animated film was officially confirmed in 2018, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic subsequently signed on to co-direct the project.

In addition to Pratt, who plays the Nintendo character, The Super Mario Bros. Movie Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black as Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser respectively.

Other artists involved in the project included Fred Armisen, Seth Rogen, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Although the premiere of The Super Mario Bros. Movie was originally scheduled for 2022, it finally premiered on April 5.

The film has since received mixed reviews from critics and currently holds a 58% rating Rotten tomatoes.

Black spoke about the prospect of a feature film sequel during a recent interview with Game Spotwhere he stated that his character may not be the main antagonist in a potential sequel.

It is not obvious that Bowser will return. You know, I’ve done a few Kung Fu Panda movies and each movie was a different villain. They can do the same,” he said.

The artist then revealed his choice of a potential opponent, as well as his preferred voice actor.

He stated, “You know, what if there’s a more powerful, more evil villain? Then maybe I should be called in to help Mario and the rest defend our universe against another unseen force of evil… Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.’
