Couple ‘turned doctor’s Malibu mansion into drugs den and stole millions’ before he died of overdose

Charged a pair of hair stylists and yoga instructors with stealing nearly $3 million from a doctor while posing as caretakers who were allegedly pumped with ketamine and turned his mansion into a five-star narcotics spa before he died of an overdose .

Anthony Flores, 46, and his ex-girlfriend Anna Moore, 39, allegedly manipulated the vulnerable David Sawusch into taking over his life and finances.

The pair were indicted by a grand jury on Dec. 15 on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to engage in money laundering, according to court documents.

Extraordinary testimony from those who worked at the doctor’s beach house in Malibu has now revealed how Flores and Moore isolated Sawusch from his family in Florida while keeping him on a cocktail of drugs and allegedly embezzling his money.

One of six therapists ordered to give Sawusch, who was a successful investor with a $60 million fortune, up to six massages a day, told The L.A. Times that the couple “just kept him drugged.”

Flores, a hairstylist from Fresno, California, and Moore, a yoga instructor living in Monterrey, Mexico, moved into the eye surgeon’s home in June 2017, just days after meeting him at an ice cream parlor near Venice Beach.

Sawusch, 57, had his medical practice for more than 30 years but suffered from severe bipolar disorder and was unable to perform surgery after burning his hands last year, according to a civil lawsuit filed by his mother in LA was sued.

He was voluntarily hospitalized several times between 2015 and 2017, the prosecutor said.

Shortly after the trio met, Sawusch suffered a serious mental breakdown and was arrested multiple times on charges including public intoxication and vandalism.

At the Twin Towers Prison in downtown LA, he was handcuffed and chained to a couch where he talked to himself, sang and abused prison guards and refused medication.

It was then that Flores reportedly suggested that Sawusch grant him a power of attorney so that he could withdraw enough money from his accounts to bail him out.

Sawusch did this despite kicking Flores and Moore out of his house in a fit of rage just three weeks after they moved in, describing them as “white collar tax fraud criminals who tried to steal my Tesla and house,” reported the LA Times.

But after Flores bailed him out of prison, he invited them back to the beach house.

The hair stylist hired a group of massage therapists and more than 20 housekeepers, handymen and other staff to work at Sawusch’s 1,200-square-foot home, telling them he wanted it to be a five-star spa of sorts, sources told the LA Times. .

In early 2018, the doctor was getting up to six massages a day of about two hours each, during which talking was discouraged.

Assistants worked in an office where they handled Sawusch’s medical, legal and financial affairs, as well as Flores and Moore’s window cleaning business in Fresno, the records show.

Flores and Moore have denied the allegations, and the former’s attorney, Ambrosio E. Rodriguez, has said it’s not true that Sawusch was “seduced and cheated” by the couple.

During this time, Flores and Moore allegedly transferred money from Sawusch’s accounts to their own personal accounts, prosecutors said.

Part of it sparked their love of LA nightlife and they threw an Oscar viewing party at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.

It also funded the couple’s “shopping sprees,” according to massage therapist Dora Peterson’s testimony.

The couple banned his friends and county case managers from visiting and told his mother not to try to contact her son, authorities said.

They also allegedly took Sawusch to a doctor for weekly infusions of ketamine to treat depression and back pain — and gave him marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms and LSD, prosecutors said.

Two weeks before Sawusch died, the couple invited a shaman, Alan, to his home for an acid trip on Mother’s Day.

He supplied liquid LSD in a vial with a dropper for sublingual doses, Flores testified.

It was while Sawusch was under the influence of LSD that Flores allegedly switched the two-step authentication on a brokerage firm account to his own number so he could access the $60 million account, prosecutors said.

Sawusch again evicted the couple after LSD further worsened his mental state, prosecutors said.

When the LSD further worsened Sawusch’s mental state, he evicted Moore and Flores from his home again.

But it seems they anticipated this and Flores and some assistants packed boxes several days beforehand, according to the testimony of Jessica McDermoot, another massage therapist.

Flores also added cameras to the house surveillance system and used it to watch Sawusch’s final demise before his death.

He spent several days disoriented, “flitting” and in a “manic state,” according to co-workers who worked there and text messages from Flores.

At one point, the cook on duty told Flores that Sawusch had left his bedroom long enough for him to tidy up. ‘Well done!’ Flores told him. “Watching all this happen is really interesting.”

Most of the footage from his final days has disappeared, but the three hours that have survived show Sawusch dying on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in 2018.

It hasn’t been released publicly, but Adam Streisand, a Los Angeles attorney for the Sawusch family, called it “the most horrific thing I’ve ever had to see in my career.”

The LA County coroner found it to be an accidental death caused by ketamine and alcohol intoxication.

But an autopsy pathologist found that ketamine and alcohol “did not contribute significantly to the immediate cause of death,” and that Sawusch died from two heart conditions: dilated cardiomyopathy and congenital narrow coronary artery disease.

According to court documents, Flores and Moore moved back to Sawusch’s beach house after his death and allegedly debited large amounts of money from his bank accounts.

In January, the FBI arrested Flores in Freson and Moore a few days later in Houston. They pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors allege the pair used ketamine, massages and marijuana to prevent Sawusch from discovering they were stealing millions of dollars from him.

But Flores’ attorney, Ambrosio E. Rodriguez, has said it’s not true that Sawusch was “seduced and cheated” by the couple.

He suggested that prosecutors exaggerated the mental ineptitude of Sawusch, whom he described as “a very successful, financially savvy individual who was in the middle of a middle-aged crisis and enjoyed having my client and Anna at his home.”

Flores and Moore were denied bail and held in separate units at the U.S. Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown LA to await trial.
