Frank Lampard hits back at suggestions that James Corden helped him land his Stamford Bridge return

Frank Lampard responds to suggestions James Corden helped him return to Stamford Bridge as he insists Chelsea owner Todd Boehly ‘made his decision based on more than conversation’

  • Frank Lampard had no questions about how he landed his return to Chelsea
  • There are suggestions that the Blues boss was recommended by James Corden
  • Lampard replied that co-owner Todd Boehly would have made his own decision

Frank Lampard has downplayed the suggestion that Chelsea owner Todd Boehly took James Corden’s advice before returning as the club’s interim boss until the end of the season.

After Lampard was appointed to succeed Graham Potter, reports surfaced that his return to Stamford Bridge was due to advice from the British broadcaster.

The self-described Englishman has been a West Ham fan and has hosted the popular American talk show Late Late Show since 2015 and has apparently developed a strong bond with Blues owner Boehly.

Corden befriended Lampard after the Sky show A League Of Their Own, in which the ex-England and Chelsea midfielder appeared in the series, and reportedly told Boehly that Lampard would be a good fit for the vacancy.

Lampard responded to the suggestion ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League trip to Real Madrid on Wednesday, explaining that he was not back at Stamford Bridge just because of Corden’s comments.

‘She [Chelsea owners] probably making decisions based on more than one conversation with one person, soā€¦ that’s as much as I’ll be asking that question,ā€ he said.

Lampard returned to Chelsea just over two years ago last week after being sacked by previous owner Roman Abramovich.

He is tasked with leading the Blues to another Champions League triumph, having last lifted the coveted trophy in 2021.

Chelsea are currently languishing in 11th in the Premier League standings after a torrid run of results and are unlikely to see any silverware this season unless they can pull off a Champions League miracle.

However, Lampard is not expected to be given the coveted manager’s position on a permanent basis, despite the robust attitude he has adopted since his return was confirmed.

Recently departed Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has often been linked with taking on the role at the end of the season, while former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, who won the treble, could be poised for a first management period in the Premier League.

A statement from Chelsea’s co-owners following Lampard’s adoption stated that the club will continue ‘our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach’.

Lampard’s first game back in charge saw the Blues beaten 1-0 by Wolves on Saturday as Matheus Nunes’ scored the only goal of the game.
