Stranger Things is getting its own Saturday morning cartoon
Stranger things may be coming to an end (when the next season comes out), but the show’s universe lives on in an animated show announced by Netflix.
Details about the show are scarce: Netflix ordered a series order for the as-yet-untitled show set in the universe. There’s no word on when the show would premiere just like season 5 of Stranger things. Like the main show, the Duffer Brothers see the animated spin-off as a way to recreate and pay homage to the pop culture of their youth.
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons we grew up watching, and it was absolutely thrilling to see this dream become a reality,” the brothers said in a statement.
The Duffers will executive produce the series, along with Eric Robles, who previously worked on it Fanboy & Chum Chum And Glitch Technologies.
This is the first Stranger things announcing a spin-off (not counting the play adaptation), but may not be the last. The show has been a big hit for Netflix, and the Duffers have said they’re not opposed to revisiting the Upside Down and its associated universe as long as they’re “feel the pull of ‘God, I really want to do this.’”
The Duffers teased for Variety there was a spin-off in the works being developed “in parallel” to Season 5, of which Matt Duffer said, “Even if we Stranger things title off, I’m so, so excited about it. But it’s not… It’s going to be different than everyone expects, including Netflix.”
So how different will the Upside Down look in this spin-off? With animation, the world looks like their (upside down) oyster.
