THE NOTEBOOK: Scott McTominay continues his goal scoring form from the international break

THE NOTEBOOK: Scott McTominay continues his goalscoring form from the international break as United cuts through Everton’s Jordan Pickford with 29 shots en route to a 2-0 win

  • Manchester United beat Everton 2-0 in their Premier League game on Saturday
  • Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial scored the goals for the hosts
  • The only cloud was a groin injury to in-form striker Marcus Rashford

Manchester United beat Everton 2-0 on Saturday to record back-to-back Champions League victories.

A goal in each half from Scott McTominay and substitute Anthony Martial were enough to put United three points ahead of Tottenham with a game in hand.

The only disadvantage for Erik ten Hag’s team was an injury to striker Marcus Rashford.

For Everton, the loss means goal difference alone will keep them out of the relegation zone.

McTominay on fire

Scott McTominay’s opener on Saturday was his fifth goal in two weeks for Manchester United and Scotland – not bad for a man who averaged less than 3.5 goals a season for club and country in his five full campaigns as a senior player.

It was also his first goal in the Premier League since September 2021 when he scored against Burnley, who were also managed by Sean Dyche at the time.

Midfielder aggression

Erik ten Hag praised McTominay’s personality and effort afterwards, but his enthusiasm got the better of him in the 63rd minute as he knocked over Seamus Coleman, kneed the Everton captain in the back and kicked the ball into his chest.

It is a measure of management turnover at Everton in recent years that Dyche was the seventh different manager to take charge in the club’s last seven visits to Old Trafford.

The previous six Everton bosses to occupy the hollow here from September 2017 were Ronald Koeman, Marco Silva, Duncan Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard.

United pepper Pickford

Manchester United pounded Jordan Pickford’s goal with 21 shots before the break, the most in the first half of a Premier League game since the 2003-04 season and more than any other top club this season.

United finished the game with a total of 29 shots, 11 of which were on target.

Divide allegiances for Keane

United’s transfer specialist Tom Keane could have been forgiven for dividing the loyalties, seen from the driver’s box.

His brother, former United graduate Michael Keane, played five days for Everton after his stunning equalizer against Tottenham.

Dyche gives away little

Dyche gave a rather cryptic answer to questions about Dele Alli’s future after the former England star returned from Turkey amid reports his loan at Besiktas has been cut short.

“He is injured and is just getting some treatment,” said the Everton boss. “He’s under contract (here) and on loan there.”
