Seth Rogen Reveals the Surprising Reason Why He Was Inspired by Russell Crowe to Play Donkey Kong in the Super Mario Bros Movie

Seth Rogan has revealed the surprising reason why he used Russell Crowe as inspiration for his new movie The Super Mario Bros.

The Canadian comedian plays the character of Donkey Kong in the new animated film based on the widely popular video game.

While Seth made it clear to the producers that he doesn’t do voices, so the animated monkey will sound like him, he did take a few tips from New Zealand-born actor Russell Crowe.

The comedian told The Daily Telegraph that while voicing the rambunctious character, he channeled Russell’s Gladiator in his opening scene.

“I think any time you enter an arena full of people to fight someone else to the death, you should look at the classics,” he said.

The 40-year-old was eager to take on the film after 1993’s live-action Super Mario Bros, starring Briton Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, fell massively short of his expectations.

Seth was only a pre-teen when it was released, and as a huge fan of the video game, he was extremely disappointed.

“I was one of the poor bastards who went to see the original in the theater in 1993 and 11-year-old Seth was very disappointed by that experience,” he said.

“The idea that an 11-year-old could possibly go to the cinema and actually see a good Mario Brothers movie that wasn’t terribly disappointing was really exciting. I was excited to justify that experience I had when I was young.”

The comedian and actor has had a busy year.

In the past 12 months, he played Bennie Loewy in the Oscar-nominated The Fabelmans, played an executive producer on Pam and Tommy, and played the voice of Allen on the animated series Invincible.

He started his comedic career at just 12 years old by performing in bar mitzvahs and just four years later, his family moved from Canada to Los Angeles to jump-start his long-standing career.

The Super Bad actor, who married his wife Lauren Miller in 2011, believes the decision not to have children contributed to his success.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast last month, he said, “Now the conversation is above all honest, thank goodness we don’t have kids.”

“We can do whatever we want, we are in the prime of our lives, we are smarter than ever before, we understand ourselves better than ever before, we have the ability to achieve a level of work and a level. of communication and care for each other, and a lifestyle that we can live with each other like we’ve never been able to live before.’
