Two British women were killed in a shooting in the West Bank today.

The women were sisters, one reportedly 15 years old and the other in his 20s, the Israeli army said. Their mother, 48, was seriously injured in an attack on their car near Hamra, 30 miles north of Jerusalem.

The IDF said its troops were blocking roads in the area and had “launched a pursuit of the terrorists.”

The shooting comes as violence between Palestinians and Israeli forces escalates after clashes at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem earlier this week.

A barrage of rockets launched from southern Lebanon late Thursday prompted Israeli warplanes to bomb Gaza overnight. While responsibility for the attack was not immediately claimed, an Israeli military spokesman blamed the Palestinian group Hamas for the rockets fired at Israeli cities.

The Israeli army previously reported that the incident in the Jordan Valley was caused by a collision between Israeli and Palestinian drivers.

Troops then reported finding bullet holes in the Israeli vehicle and treating it as a deliberate attack.

Kan, an Israeli public broadcaster, said 22 shell casings were found.

Medics found the three victims in critical condition and failed to save the lives of the two younger daughters.

A third victim was taken to hospital by helicopter.

Sky quoted local media claimed the two women who died were sisters, one aged 15 and the other in her 20s.

The BBC has reported that the sisters were in their twenties.
