Four people have died and another has been taken to hospital following a tragic accident between two cars.

Police were called around 6.45am on Friday after reports of an accident during heavy rain on the Barton Highway between near Casuarina Lane near Murrumbateman, New South Wales, north of Canberra.

The highway has been closed in both directions since around 7 a.m. after emergency services, including three rescue helicopters, arrived on the scene.

On arrival at the scene, NSW Police found a Ford Ranger utility and a Mitsubishi Triton utility had collided.

“The female driver and male passenger of the Mitsubishi, and a male driver and male passenger of the Ford died at the scene,” NSW police said in a statement.

“They have not been formally identified.”

Another male passenger of the Ford was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance and was taken to hospital in an unknown condition.

A crime scene has been cordoned off and police are investigating the cause of the accident.

As the investigation continues, anyone with dashcam visibility or more information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NSW Fire and Rescue attempted to ‘take out’ several passengers trapped in the wreck around 8:30 am.

Emergency services have urged Easter travelers to avoid the highway as it could be closed in both directions for some time.

Both northbound and southbound traffic will be diverted via the Rijksweg.

Emergency services from ACT report that it may take a while before the highway can reopen.
