Motorists have watched in horror as a brazen driver flipped and rolled several times after plowing into a road sign on the hard shoulder.

The driver of the Toyota Prado was captured on dashcam footage on March 31 on the Tonkin Highway near the Rowely Road turnoff, in Hilbert, south of Perth.

The 4WD is seen speeding down the hard shoulder past accreted traffic before crashing into a traffic sign, the impact of which causes the car to flip upside down.

The Prado then rolls down an embankment before coming to a stop, as shocked onlookers carefully drive towards the upturned vehicle.

WA police said a 46-year-old man was assisted by members of the public and taken to hospital as a precaution.

The man miraculously escaped without serious injury.

An internet user wondered if the driver had had a medical episode.

“I hope they’re okay if they did. But if they didn’t… maybe next time they’ll learn to wait and be patient like everyone else,” they said.

“Very dangerous and not uncommon in WA. Worse yet, they drive with no concern for their safety or anyone else’s,” another wrote.

‘Serves them well. Sick of impatient people doing this,” a third commented.

A witness explained that there had been another accident further up the road, which explained why a tow truck appeared so quickly on the hard shoulder.

“Great to see people helping no matter the situation and the tow truck driver was in the right place at the right time,” another user replied.

The man was taken away in handcuffs and placed in a paddy wagon, according to witnesses who claimed to have witnessed the crash.

The police are investigating the incident.

Emergency lanes provide a safe place for people to contact emergency services if there has been an accident or incident on the road.
