A distressed mother hits back at other parents after her teenage daughter was shamed for wearing “too much makeup” when she went missing.
The 14-year-old disappeared over the weekend before being found in Sydney’s CBD at 9pm on Sunday.
During the desperate search, an image of the girl was posted to a Facebook group to warn others in the community.
But several comments were made about her appearance and how much makeup she wore.
On Monday, the mother took matters into her own hands and hit back with a lengthy message on Facebook.
The mother grilled other parents on Facebook who criticized the 14-year-old daughter for wearing ‘too much makeup’ before she went missing
The mother wrote that she was “so baffled by so many judgmental comments” about her daughter’s appearance.
She asked those in the group who left a comment to question their position.
“For those saying she looked older and how could her parents let her wear all that makeup, how relevant is that? How does that affect why a child goes missing?” she asked.
“You mean if she’s been kidnapped, it’s her fault because of what she’s wearing? Are you saying that because she wears makeup, her parents are bad parents?
“You mean because she wants to look older, she has to look promiscuous?”
She went on to say that her daughter has a “passion for makeup” and was about to enroll in a beauty class.
She then continued to point out the comments about blaming victims.
“What about our society bombarding our teens and girls with the message that they should be beautiful and mature and ‘sexy’ and horny?” she said.
“And if they start looking like that, why are they being shamed and blamed when something happens to them?”
The mother also asked why parents are condemned for ‘allowing’ their teens to wear make-up.
Fortunately, the daughter was found safely on Sunday. The mother said, “If you made a comment about her looks/or her parents, you should be ashamed” (stock image)
She didn’t stop until her point was made.
“It shouldn’t matter what she looks like or what she’s wearing. It is NEVER okay to blame a girl/woman (or her mother) when something sinister happens to her. We all know this victim is to blame/misogyny,” she continued.
“If you made a comment about her looks/or her parents, you should be ashamed.”
Instead, she encouraged others to support women, girls and mothers.
“I think girls already have enough to do in this world with all the pressures that society brings and an increase in violence against women without being blamed for it too,” she said.
