Kandahar trailer finds Gerard Butler as a CIA agent trying to make it out of Afghanistan alive
Gerard Butler plays a CIA agent trying to make it out of Afghanistan in one piece in Kandahar’s explosive new trailer.
The film was written by former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune, who based the story on his experiences working for the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2013 when he was deployed to Afghanistan during the Snowden leaks.
Butler – who most recently starred in the action thriller Plane – plays Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative trapped deep undercover in Afghanistan when he learns his mission has been compromised.

The trailer opens with Tom asking Roman (Travis Fimmell) why he’s there, as Roman explains, “I need you. We’re going to destroy their entire nuclear program.”
The interpreter and Tom drive past some men hanging from ropes as the interpreter says, “They knew the risks, believe me.”
Tom goes undercover and takes out the target, while his actions are celebrated at home…although it is learned that the mission has been compromised.
Tom is seen destroying cards and telling the interpreter, ‘cover is broken. We leave in 15 minutes.’
They set off in a pickup truck as Roman tells them, “the extraction point is an old CIA base in Kandahar province.”
The interpreter says, “I just want to go home,” and Tom says, “I’ll be with you,” as they encounter quite a bit of resistance.
It’s revealed they have 400 miles to go in just 30 hours, as Roman explains, “It’s not about the distance, it’s about what’s in between.”
Roman is heard saying, “Whoever captures my man will sell him to the highest bidder,” while another shot shows Tom and the interpreter being approached by many soldiers.

“I need names,” says the man, though she says they haven’t been given names and the man asks to believe her.
The interpreter asks Tom what’s really going on, but all he’ll say is “we’re cutouts in a really bigger game.”
“No one is coming to save us,” Tom says clearly before more action footage is shown from the trailer.
The final shots show a minefield causing a chain reaction explosion in the desert, while Tom and the interpreter are left exhausted to walk on.
The film also stars Ali Fazal, Bahador Foladi, Olivia Mai-Barrett, Nina Toussaint-White and Rebecca Calder.
Butler also serves as producer alongside Basil Iwanyk, Scott LaStaiti, Christian Mercuri and Alan Siegel.
Open Road Films released the film in theaters nationwide on May 26.
