Brian Cox insisted he has “no idea” who the Spice Girls are during an appearance on Monday’s This Morning show.

The 76-year-old Succession actor was probed about the legendary girl band during the show, which came just days after he claimed to be a “closet hustler”.

He appeared alongside his friend Alan Cumming on a new episode of Carpool Karaoke last week, which became its own spin-off show.

During the show, Brian sang the Spice Girls hit song Wannabe and described himself as a secret fan of the group.

But setting the record straight, he has now shared that he actually has “no idea” who they are, and only sang at the request of his friend Alan Cumming.

Brian appeared on the sofa at This Morning to speak with hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, who questioned him about his recent car musical performance and song choice.

But bringing things to a close, the acclaimed actor replied: “Now this whole thing with the Spice Girls is bullshit. I have no idea who the Spice Girls are.”

Trying to show his limited knowledge of the band, Brian tried to name the quintet, but mistakenly dubbed it ‘Old Spice’.

“I mean, I know there were several, like ancient spices and ginger spices,” the actor said, to which Dermot interrupted: “There’s no ancient spices, I mean, maybe now there are.”

“Yeah, all those spices,” Brian replied as he referred to the band’s nicknames, which saw Geri Horner dubbed Ginger Spice, Victoria Beckham dubbed Posh Spice, Mel B as Scary Spice, Mel C as Sporty Spice and Emma Bunton as Baby Spice. .

Brian appeared at Carpool Karaoke along with fellow Scottish actor Alan, who appeared in the film Spice World, blaming him for the Spice Girl songs being played.

He explained, “Alan Cumming was actually in the Spice Girls movie, so when we did Carpool Karaoke, I wanted to sing this ridiculous song, which I can’t even remember what it is.”

To jog his memory, This Morning later paid for the clip of Brian singing and claiming to be a fan, to which he replied, “That’s so embarrassing, when you’re a closet fan, it’s a really deep closet.”

The Spice Girls formed in 1994 and stormed the charts with hits like Wannabe, 2 Become 1 and Spice Up Your Life.

And the film Spice World, which Brian referenced, was a number one box office hit in the UK, grossing £2.3m.
