Eddie Howe slams Erik ten Hag ‘nonsense’ claims after Newcastle beat Man United

Eddie Howe slams Erik ten Hag’s ‘NONSENSE’ time wasting claims as his Newcastle team edged past Man United for third place… even the Toon Twitter account mocked their four defeated rivals!

Eddie Howe hit back at Erik ten Hag’s ‘nonsense’ after his team Newcastle United edged Manchester United into third place in the Premier League.

Goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson earned a deserved 2-0 win at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon to boost Newcastle’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

It also provided a measure of revenge for Newcastle’s defeat by the same scoreline in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in February.

Prior to that match, Ten Hag had branded Howe’s team “annoying” and accused him of deliberately turning the clock back during the teams’ goalless draw at Old Trafford in October.

Newcastle’s official Twitter account even got in on the act during Sunday’s win, tweeting “no time wasting required” when the game ended, before describing Allan Saint-Maximin as “annoying” to play him.

And Howe later said: “I want to make one thing very clear: we want the ball to be in play.” We want a fast game.

‘I don’t understand where this nonsense of wasting time has come from, because it’s not us and you saw today, we wanted the ball to be back in play as quickly as possible. High energy, high pace.’

Howe and Ten Hag became involved in an angry exchange during the second half as Newcastle tried to run out time on their goal lead.

The Newcastle manager was pointing out to Ten Hag that his team had been trying to do the same at 0-0.

Howe added: ‘I will always defend my team. I will always stand up for what I think is right, and that is what I will always do. I think if something isn’t accurate, then naturally you want to get the point across right.

‘But we fully deserved the win. We show real faith. Today it is a model of how we want the team to play, in almost all phases.”

The win was a huge boost to Newcastle’s hopes of finishing in the top four as they edged past Man United on goal difference.

Tottenham can get past both, and push Ten Hag’s side to fifth place, if they beat Everton on Monday night.
