Celebrities’ worst ever Coachella outfits revealed
Coachella traditionally kicks off the summer concert circuit in the US – and soon it’s that time again.
The music festival, which runs over the weekends of April 14-16 and April 21-23, takes place at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California.
And many attendees see it as an opportunity to be careful while showing off their own signature style.
But they will often fall for festival fashion clichés – from bohemian maxi dresses and floral headbands to fringed jackets and face jewels.
Coachella has long been a firm celebrity favorite, but with it comes a slew of famous faces that make fashion fail of itself.
Here, FEMAIL reveals the most hair-raising celebrity looks spotted at the festival over the years.
2010: Katy Perry’s messy camouflage led to a very chaotic collision
Katy Perry really missed the mark with her outfit choice at Coachella in 2010 with her messy camo leading to a very chaotic clash
Katy Perry is a longtime attendee of Coachella – she’s been a part of the festival crowd for over 15 years.
But the singer really missed the mark with her choice of outfit in 2010.
She opted for a Louis Vuitton ensemble that consisted of a camouflage print neon apron worn over a bundle-layered tulle dress.
The hitmaker topped off the already chaotic ensemble with a pair of pink-cut gladiator sandals and ’80s-inspired angular hues.
2012: Emma Roberts missed the mark with a tried and true festival ensemble
Emma Roberts took the relaxed, dressy look a little too far, as she completely unbuttoned her jeans in 2012
Emma Roberts stripped down to a teeny-tiny top and Daisy Dukes to party at the 2012 festival.
But while it’s a tried-and-true ensemble for thousands of festival-goers, the actress’ attempt to recreate the outfit was subpar.
She took the relaxed, dressy look a little too far, as she wore her jeans wide open.
Emma paired her little outfit with a pair of pink ankle socks and a pair of Converse sneakers.
2013: Rita Ora actively avoided festival chic – but the alternative was just as disappointing
Rita Ora bared her midriff by pairing a low-slung skirt and hot pink bikini top that peaked through a rolled-up white T-shirt at Coachella in 2013
Rita may have gone a little too far with self-expression when she showed up in 2013 in a bizarre mix and match outfit.
The singer bared her midriff by pairing a low-slung skirt – adorned with giant faces – with a bright pink bikini top that sticks out through a rolled-up white T-shirt.
She completed her look with a cross dangling from a dog collar necklace and a sheer PVC jacket.
The icing on the cake was a backwards baseball cap that hung over her platinum blonde curly locks.
2012 and 2015: Paris Hilton missed the mark on more than one Coachella occasion
Paris Hilton has been a repeat offender when it comes to slipping into hair-raising Coachella attire — after making fashion faux par in 2012 (left) and 2015 (right)
Paris Hilton is a repeat offender when it comes to donning hair-raising Coachella attire.
The first strike was in 2012 when she fully embraced festival clichés with a showy, flowing maxi skirt, bejeweled bikini top and tacky floral crown.
But the socialite didn’t learn her lesson and wasn’t back until three years later with an equally hideous ensemble.
In 2015, she wore a blue dress with a contrasting print, round sunglasses and a pair of cat ears.
2014: Jared Leto proved why the ‘zebra print skinny jeans’ trend should be left alone
Jared Leto proved after his performance at the festival in 2014 why the ‘zebra-print skinny jeans’ trend should be left alone
The term “zebra skinny jeans” is enough to frighten many a fashion guru.
But in 2014, Jared Leto took it a step further by pairing the signature trouser style with a white camisole and a plaid shirt tied around his waist.
While mixing and matching patterns can sometimes work to your advantage, unfortunately this wasn’t one of those occasions.
The zebra-inspired pants are definitely a sartorial mistake that should be left in Coachella’s past.
2014: Bella Thorne fell right into the fringe trap of the festival
Actress Bella Thorne fell down the festival rabbit hole when she attended Coachella in 2014
Many think fringe should be on the banned list of festivals, but Bella Thorne went for it anyway when she attended Coachella in 2014.
She wore a brown fringed bra top, Aztec shorts and black and white flat sandals.
Falling further down the festival fashion rabbit hole, the actress wore her hair down with some braided locks before adding a floral headpiece.
Bella also appeared to have drawn a large star on her neck for the occasion.
2014: Kylie and Kendall Jenner chose festival fashion with a shocking all-black twist
Kendall and Kylie Jenner looked out of place when they tried to take the traditional festival look to the next level in 2014 by opting for all-black ensembles
Also in 2014, Kylie and Kendall Jenner seemed out of place as they tried — but arguably failed — to take the traditional festival look to the next level.
The duo looked more like they were ready for a catwalk than increasingly muddy fields.
Kylie wore a short black mini dress, which she wore with a studded fanny pack, chunky boots and a black cloth floral crown.
Kendall’s picks also left a lot to be desired as she stepped out in a plain black crop top and ruffled shorts, which she paired with a long, sheer patterned dress and heavy studded sandals.
2014: Vanessa Hudgens struggled with festival clichés when she opted for face jewelry and a bindi
Vanessa Hudgens struggled with festival clichés in 2014 – what appears to have been a year of fashion fails across the board
The star wore an array of face gems, including a central bindi, which are now largely considered a no-go outside of their intended use
The year 2014 seems to have been a bad year for celebrity fashion choices in general as Vanessa Hudgens also made a festival fashion misstep.
The actress attempted to channel hippie chic with an off-the-shoulder patterned dress with an elasticated waist and tasseled boots.
But to make matters worse, she then wore an array of facial gems, including a central bindi, which are now largely considered forbidden outside of their intended use.
At one point, she went incognito as she made her way across the greenery with angular sunglasses and a scarf wrapped around her face.
2019: James Charles also made a fringe faux pas in his very sassy festival outfit
YouTuber James Charles isn’t one to hold back when it comes to his fashion choices — and neither was his 2019 Coachella outfit
The real surprise came when the star turned around and his outfit exposed much of his behind
YouTuber James Charles isn’t one to hold back when it comes to his fashion choices — and his “cowboy-inspired” outfit was one of the most chilling at Coachella in 2019.
He, too, made a wrong fringe when he opted for a suede two-piece suit with lavish tassels that gave a glimpse of very skimpy jeans.
And if that wasn’t enough, he topped off the look with a color-coordinated cowboy hat.
