I suffered from extreme pregnancy nose that left me unrecognizable

A woman has revealed that she suffered from extreme ‘pregnancy nose’, which caused her nose to double in size, rendering it completely unrecognizable.

Towards the end of his first trimester, 24-year-old Tyreece Wood noticed that the size of his nose began to change, but he didn’t give it much thought at first, until it changed drastically from its original size and shape.

As the weeks passed, the US-based content creator noticed that the texture of her skin, hair, and eyebrows began to transform as well.

At the end of her pregnancy, the mother-to-be felt ‘disgusting’ and did not ‘recognise’ herself when looking in the mirror.

What to expect when you’re expecting! What is pregnancy nose?

  • The phenomenon causes a woman’s nose to expand and change shape before giving birth.
  • Occurs due to a significant increase in the hormone estrogen, which relaxes blood vessels in all tissues of the body.
  • It allows more blood to enter the tissue of the nose, making it larger.
  • Significant increases in hormone levels can also cause nosebleeds and nasal obstruction, discharge, or itching, medically known as pregnancy rhinitis.
  • It affects one in five pregnant women.

In an attempt to clarify the situation, she decided to share her story on TikTok, where it garnered more than 15.4 million views and 1.8 million likes.

“The changes made me feel sick,” said Tyreece, who works as a direct support professional.

‘Dealing with the changes to your body during pregnancy is hard enough, but looking in the mirror and not recognizing yourself is daunting.

“That’s why there aren’t many photos of me pregnant,” she explained.

She added that she had never heard of any other woman speaking out about the symptoms she experienced and felt alone.

“I have never seen anyone talk about most of the symptoms I had during my pregnancy.

“I thought all the changes would be safe in my weight and my hormones.

“But actually, my skin and hair texture changed, one of my eyebrows became more prominent, I gained 100 pounds, and my skin darkened, too.”

Surprisingly though, Tyreece says her partner and other family members didn’t notice the change in her appearance until after she gave birth.

She said: ‘I asked my husband and family members if they noticed a difference and they always said no, or maybe a little bit.

“My husband only pointed it out after our son was born and we were looking at the photos from the hospital.

“That’s when he realized my nose was normally much smaller.”

Fortunately, her nose returned to its normal size a month after her baby arrived.

In the clip, Tyreece reveals a collection of images from before and during the pregnancy, which has left users shocked, with many even struggling to believe that it is the same person.

The trend of women sharing their ‘pregnant noses’ has taken over the video-sharing platform.

According to Professor Adam Taylor, director of the Clinical Anatomy Learning Center and professor of anatomy at Lancaster University, the facial alteration may be “more noticeable for some women.”

writing in The conversationHe said: ‘The reason it happens is due to the significant increases in hormone levels during pregnancy, particularly due to the increase in estrogen, which relaxes blood vessels in all tissues of the body.

“This allows more blood to enter the tissue in the nose, causing it to expand and change shape, appearing larger and puffier.”

Significant increases in hormone levels can also cause nosebleeds and nasal obstruction, discharge or itching, known medically as pregnancy rhinitis, Professor Taylor said.

This commonly affects around one in five pregnant women.

A 2013 study published in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology found among 117 pregnant women, 39 percent experienced pregnancy rhinitis.

However, she noted that it’s “nothing to worry about” either, as the growth of the nose “normally resolves” within six weeks of delivery, once hormones return to normal levels.
