Oklahoma State Rep. Dean Davis is arrested for public drunkenness

Oklahoma State Representative Dean Davis was caught on camera telling police they couldn’t arrest him because of his political position while being handcuffed last week for public intoxication.

Republican Davis, 50, had been drinking with friends at Skinny Slims, a bar in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, when police officers arrived. Police say he and his friends refused to leave the bar, which had closed, and drank on the outdoor patio.

Body camera footage shows officers handcuffing a dazed Davis as he protested and told them to call their supervisors. He told them that they were not allowed to arrest him, claiming that he had the “privilege of being arrested during the session of the Legislature.”

The cops ignored his comments and locked him up in the county jail.

You can’t stop me! she yelled.

‘I can, and I am now’, Sgt. Timothy Brewer told him.

It’s not his first brush with the law; in 2019, he was arrested for a DUI.

No one had called the police to the scene. The two officers involved were driving back to the station after completing a shift when they saw Davis and his friends sitting on the patio.

They approached and told the men that they were violating state law that prohibits drinking in the bar after 2 am. It was 2:11 am when they approached.

Davis insists that he was not drunk and says that he did nothing wrong.

Speaking in the legislature last week, he said: ‘I understand that last night has become a story and that many of my colleagues in the House are being asked to comment on or explain the events of last night. I dispute any wrongdoing.

‘However, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to this body for creating this unnecessary distraction from the important work of the House. Thank you members for allowing me this time. Thank you, Mr. President.

Rep. TJ Marti, who was also there but was not arrested, claims Davis did nothing wrong and was drinking a Dr. Pepper when police arrived.

He did not show them his identification. In reality, he was ordering an Uber and trying to get away from them when they arrested him.

The cops first approached Davis to tell him he couldn't be drinking on the Skinny Slims patio at 2:11 a.m.

“They didn’t show the first 30 seconds of the video where they jump out of their cars yelling at everyone.

I’d like to see the rest of that. I’m sure you can probably make that happen.

They left out the part where they’re yelling at a crowd of seven, went straight to Dean and didn’t speak to anyone else. They left that whole part out. Dean was arrested for being a legislator while he was drinking a Dr. Pepper,’ he told Oklahoma-based news outlet NonDoc.

Martí also denied that he was drunk.

‘It was not what is reported. Anyone who can see that video can see that he is clearly not intoxicated. Anyone who knows Dean knows that he carries eye drops with him. He uses eye drops all the time. He has allergic conjunctivitis. His eyes are already red. You meet him at the Capitol, look into his eyes.

Other state officials, including Gov. Kevin Stitt, have not been as forgiving.

‘Sometimes, people make bad decisions and… must be held accountable.

‘So I don’t know anything specific about that. But, you know, we’re going to be a law and order state in Oklahoma and we’re going to hold ourselves to higher standards, especially as public servants,” she said at her news conference Friday.

Democrats say he should “take responsibility” and call for the speaker of the state House of Representatives to intervene.

I’ve reviewed the arrest footage. The video was distressing. It is known that this is not the first time the Representative has been arrested on charges related to intoxication and has attempted to use his position as an elected official to avoid facing consequences.

“It sounds like you need to seek help for substance abuse. And I sincerely hope it does,’ said Rep. Cyndi Munson Oklahoma News4.
