- Gareth Southgate hopes his team can build on their win over Italy
Phil Foden is suffering from appendicitis and has undergone surgery, meaning he is unavailable for England’s clash against Ukraine today.
James Maddison is set to start Gareth Southgate’s attack ahead of Jack Grealish in Euro 2024 qualifying at Wembley.
But Foden, who was also hoping to start, will miss the game after falling ill.
Foden is understood to have started feeling unwell after training on Saturday and has since undergone surgery.
The news is a blow to Southgate ahead of the match against the Ukrainians, although it is unclear if Foden would have started before Maddison had he been fit.
Phil Foden will miss England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine due to appendicitis after Man City began feeling unwell after the Three Lions’ training session on Saturday.
Foden’s surgery could have an impact on Man City’s title fight in the coming weeks.
But development will also be a major concern for Manchester City ahead of the start of the season.
Foden will have to undergo a rehabilitation period after the operation and, at the very least, will be a doubt for next weekend’s decisive clash against Liverpool.
Appendix operations can take up to four weeks to recover.
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson is hoping to return to England’s starting XI this afternoon in place of Kalvin Phillips.
Southgate will also be forced to make a change at left-back with Luke Shaw suspended after picking up a red card against Italy on Friday night.
Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier are in the running to replace Shaw.
Foden last appeared when England defeated Italy 2-1 in their first qualifying game.
