Prime Minister Rishi Sunak congratulated Harry Kane on breaking England’s goalscoring record with a video call from 10 Downing Street.
Kane broke the record when England beat Italy on Thursday in their first Euro 2024 qualifier, scoring his 54th goal for the Three Lions.
It’s a remarkable achievement for the Tottenham player, having surpassed Wayne Rooney to the top of the tally.
Sunak told Kane: ‘You are an incredible role model for our country in the way you go about your business and you know you are scoring all the goals, but you do it with humility.
“You talk about your teammates, you can see how they respect you, and that says a lot about your character. You know, that’s weird.
Harry Kane became England’s all-time leading goalscorer after scoring against Italy on Thursday.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak phoned Kane to congratulate him on breaking the record this week.
The Tottenham and England man responded by saying: ‘I appreciate it, thank you very much. That means a lot for me. You know, I love playing for my country.
England take on Ukraine in their second qualifying match at Wembley on Sunday. Gareth Southgate said his players were focused on winning the game, despite the ongoing war involving their visitors.
