Brazilian goalkeeper who had lover kidnapped, murdered and fed to dogs signed by new club aged 38

The Brazilian goalkeeper who ordered the kidnapping and murder of his model girlfriend has been signed by a new football club at the age of 38.

Bruno Fernandes de Souza was sentenced to 22 years in prison after confessing to plotting the murder of 25-year-old Eliza Samudio, whose body was dismembered in June 2010 and fed to his pet Rottweilers.

The actress and model was kidnapped, beaten up and killed by a gang, including a former police officer.

The goalkeeper, who is commonly known by his first name in Brazil, cheated on his wife with Ms. Samudio and she had his child.

A paternity and child support lawsuit ensued – Bruno later confessed to organizing the plot.

He was sentenced to 22 years and three months in prison in March 2013 after a court found him guilty of ordering Eliza’s murder, concealing her body and kidnapping their infant son.

But Bruno’s closed prison sentence was converted into a semi-open prison sentence in July 2019.

In a semi-open prison regime, inmates are allowed to work outside the prison during the day, but must return to the prison each night.

However, inadequate facilities at Varginha Prison led officials to force him to sleep in his home, where he was required to stay between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night.

And in January of this year, the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro granted Bruno parole.

The only condition for his release is that he must report every three months to the Secretariat of the Penitentiary Administration of Rio de Janeiro.

Now a team in Sao Paulo has nabbed the former Atletico Mineiro, Corinthians and Flamengo man.

Orion Futebol Clube announced the signing on social media on Wednesday by posting a photo of the former lay grinning broadly and raising a clenched fist.

The club, taking part in this year’s Super Copa Pioneer, wrote: ‘Backup for the position, welcome!’

Orion is the seventh team to sign Bruno since 2017, when he was awarded habeas corpus before being ordered back to prison three months later.

Bruno’s last team was Atletico Carioca in Sao Goncalo, Rio de Janeiro state.

Mrs. Samudio met Bruno at a soccer party in May 2009 and accidentally got pregnant.

The keeper demanded that she have an abortion, but she went ahead with the pregnancy, insisting that he assume the child’s paternity.

Before her disappearance on June 4, 2010, Ms. Samudio had approached the police claiming she had been held captive by Bruno and his associates, who forced her to use an illegal abortion drug.

Bruno allegedly put a gun to her head and told her, “You don’t know who I am or what I’m capable of – I’m from the favela.”

Baby Bruninho was born in February 2010, but the player refused to acknowledge he was the father.

At trial, prosecutors alleged that Bruno ordered Ms. Samudio’s murder after she told him she would take legal action to force him to pay child support.

In a statement to police, the footballer’s teenage cousin, Jorge Rosa, claimed that he and Romao picked up Ms. Samudio and her son from a hotel in Rio de Janeiro after she accepted an invitation from the footballer to discuss the paternity claims.

He said they drove her 220 miles to an estate in Belo Horizonte that Bruno and his wife used as a weekend retreat, where she was held captive for six days.

Ms Samudio was then reportedly handed over to former military police officer Santos, who “barbarously tortured” her before strangling her with a tie in front of her four-month-old son.

Santos, who was allegedly paid £8,000 to kill her, played loud music on a stereo to drown out the woman’s screams, it was alleged.

Edson Moreira, a detective investigating the case, said: “His actions were almost impossible to describe without breaking down – images from the worst nightmare imaginable.”

Police later found Ms. Samudio’s four-month-old baby in a Belo Horizonte slum, said to have been left there by Bruno’s wife Dayane. DNA tests later proved the footballer’s paternity. The child was then transferred to the care of Mrs. Samudio’s mother.
