A school has sent a letter to concerned parents after a female teacher was accused of taking care of a teenage boy and committing an ‘indecent act’.

Chelsea Jane Edwards, 28, of Paradise Point, southeast of Brisbane, was charged on March 10 with two counts of grooming and one count of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16 while working at Indooroopilly State School.

Police allege the school’s sports coordinator met the teen through an Indooroopilly educational facility and began grooming him from last July, when the pair met socially outside of school.

Executive director, Michael Hornby, wrote a letter on Tuesday to address the “allegations of a serious nature.”

In the letter, Mr Hornby assured the school community that they would provide support during the ordeal.

“First of all, I want to assure you that we treat the safety and well-being of our children, our students, as our highest priority at all times,” he wrote.

“While I appreciate your understanding of the details of this case, I am sure you will understand that I cannot go into details for legal reasons.

In that regard, I ask that you consider not commenting on the matter on social media or other forums.

“Support services are available to anyone who needs help.

“Thank you for your continued support of our school.”

The state’s Child Protection and Investigation Unit was made aware of the teacher’s alleged actions in February after a complaint was filed.

Ms Edwards will appear again at Southport Magistrates Court on May 2.

It is clear that she has been on leave since the indictment on March 10.

Indooroopilly State School has approximately 2,500 students, making it one of the largest state schools in Queensland.

That is what a father of two children told at the school Courier Mail that from Monday evening there had been ‘no communication from the school to the parents’.

“I was a little surprised about that because I would have thought they would want to address the concerns before news came out from other sources,” he said.

He said his children were surprised by the news as the teacher was well liked by students.
