And while its origins lie in sacred rituals, many use the day to kick back, enjoy a drink or two, and bask in the festivities of pageants.
Fortunately, partygoers from all over the world have caught their antics on camera as they enjoy the patron saint of Ireland, and shared their revelry online.
A hilarious image – posted to a popular Facebook group where thousands share their festive antics – shows a man so devoted to the lore that he’s dyed his goatee a brilliant shade of green.
Elsewhere, pets joined in the fun when an owner dressed his dog in clover green gear and said “kiss me, I’m Irish.”
It’ll take a few rounds to crack this, so to save you the trouble, the sentence sounds like “well I’ll be f*****d”
Meanwhile, a group of friends poked fun at the drunken partying by posing themselves around the house in various poses, surrounded by empty bottles.
They captioned the resulting snap, Irish Yoga, and sure enough, the child’s pose can be a relaxing pose for anyone with a sore head the next day.
And in the US, a cheeky convenience store tried to trick people into buying miniature bottles of whiskey for $1.49 by advertising them as “Irish flu shots.”
