5 essential tips for off-roading beginners
Off-roading is a great way to get away from it all and have an adventure, but while heading off grid can be a lot of fun it’s also not without risks, so it’s important to plan and pack for your trip before you set off. Here are our top five tips all off-road beginners need to know:
Pack an Off-Road Navigation System
Part of the fun of the whole off-roading experience is heading into the unknown, but that thrill will soon turn to despair if you can’t find your way home. Therefore, you’ll need an off-road navigation system that doesn’t rely on remote networks and has enough power to last for longer than you plan on being away.
Tires
For off-road trips it’s important to have the correct tires for the terrain, whether that’s all-terrain, mud or rock tires. A popular choice is the rocky terrain Nitto tires. These will suit any ride and the super-rigged treads will take this tire through the toughest terrain, giving beginners an added confidence boost.
Make sure your tire turns easily in your vehicle’s wheel wells and remember that while larger tires provide more ground clearance, going too big could mean re-gearing your axles or transmission.
Emergency Communication and First Aid Kit
If it was totally safe, off-roading wouldn’t be so popular, and accidents can occasionally happen. Whether your lost, injured, taken ill or plain old broken down, you’re going to need a way to communicate with civilization so they can help get you out of there.
Phones are usually sufficient but be sure to check the network coverage for where you’re going. Satellite phones, CB radio, or VHF radio are other great backup options to consider.
Should you require medical assistance when you’re off-roading, help will not be arriving any time soon, so it’s important to pack a well-equipped first aid kit – and know how to use it. It’s far better to have one and not need it than the other way around.
Tool kit
If you break down while off-roading in the middle of nowhere, it’s a good idea to pack a tool kit so you can try and fix the problem yourself and avoid paying costly towing fees. A perfect tool set will include wrenches, ratchets, drivers, pliers, sockets, and a work light. Make sure you pack a jump starter too but check that it can accommodate your vehicle’s battery size.
Know Your Limits
Off-roading is all about knowing your limits, especially if you’re new to it all and are still learning the ropes. Mistakes and accidents can be costly, not only financially but physically too, so take your time and build up your knowledge and experience.
It’s always a good idea to take a friend with you as backup on your first few trips, as this means you will have another vehicle available to pull you out of trouble or guide you through and over any obstacles.
