Shocking moment murder suspect escapes from Oregon courthouse after security officers unshackled him
Shocking surveillance footage shows the moment a murder suspect simply ran out of an Oregon courthouse after sheriff’s deputies released him.
Ed Villalobos, 28, was scheduled to stand trial on February 27 for allegedly stabbing his mother’s partner before stabbing an unrelated man just two hours later and leading police on an hours-long manhunt in 2021. .
But when a sheriff’s deputy removed the shackles from her wrists and ankles, as required by Oregon’s awakening laws, she scrambled to her feet, pushed a chair and ran toward it, down the hall and past the doors of Staff Only. .
He did so after the agents left a clear and obvious escape route.
Police were only able to catch up with him once more after a two-hour chase when someone reported a man trying to break into an apartment.
Villalobos is now back in custody and will face additional charges for his escape attempt.
Ed Villalobos, 28, stood trial on February 27 for allegedly stabbing his mother’s partner before stabbing an unrelated man just two hours later.
Shocking courtroom security footage shows him on the run
Security footage from the Washington County Courthouse shows two sheriff’s deputies, apparently a man and a woman, leading Villalobos down a hallway to the first-floor courtroom where his hearing was scheduled.
Once inside, the officer gropes him and removes the shackles from his wrists, after which Villalobos takes a seat so the officer can also remove the shackles from his ankles.
“When it comes to removing restrictions, that’s what Oregon law requires us to do,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Department later said in a statement.
But once the deputy is done, Villalobos simply stands up, pushes a chair behind the table where he and his lawyers would have sat for the trial, and begins running out of the courtroom.
He makes his way through the courtroom door as the deputy sheriff follows a few feet behind him, the female officer in tow.
As he moves towards the corridor, Villalobos increases the distance between him and the officers, who are still following him on foot, and appears to jump in front of a woman who is about to open the outside door.
Villalobos nearly knocks over a man when he tries to get to the Personal Only door, which it slams shut behind him.
In the footage, a sheriff’s deputy could be seen untying Villalobos’s wrists.
Villalobos then sat down so the deputy could also remove the restraints from his ankles, per Oregon law.
Once the deputy finished, Villalobo stood up, pushed a chair and ran out of the Washington County courtroom.
It’s unclear when sheriff’s deputies lost track of him, but what followed was a two-hour manhunt through the city of Hillsboro, where police blocked off streets and even used a drone to track Villalobos’ location.
After almost two hours, KATU Someone reportedly alerted deputies that someone was trying to break into an apartment in the 300 block of Southeast Fourth Avenue.
The owner said no one was supposed to be inside, but when agents searched the house they found Villalobos hiding in a closet under a blanket.
He was then taken back into custody, sheriff’s officials say, and a grand jury indicted him on charges related to his escape.
Villalobos’s trial has now also been postponed to a later date.
He walked through the courtroom door as deputies followed.
Villalobos managed to gain enough distance between himself and the deputies while running
The murder suspect nearly ran over an innocent bystander while making his way through the staff-only doors to the outside world.
He is accused of stabbing 33-year-old Artemio Guzmán-Olvera, whom his mother was seeing, in April 2021 and fleeing the scene in a car.
About two hours later, the oregonian Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies working for the city were reportedly called to an assault at an apartment complex, where they say Villalobos stabbed 26-year-old Saúl Antonio Ramírez Aguierre.
Aguierre was rushed to hospital in critical condition afterwards, but ultimately survived.
About half an hour after the second stabbing, a police officer spotted Villalobos’s car and a police chase ensued.
At one point, the sheriff’s department said, he stopped, got out of the car and ran.
But with the help of various law enforcement agencies, Villalobos was arrested and jailed.
