- Harry Kane has criticized Tottenham’s failure to win trophies after AC Milan’s defeat
- The striker said securing a top-four spot was not enough for the club.
- The England star claimed the team is “missing something” to succeed
Harry Kane insisted that settling for finishing in the top four is not enough for a club like Tottenham after being knocked out by AC Milan in the Champions League.
‘Where we are as a club, we should be winning trophies. That is always the goal. the first four [being our only target] it is a consequence of not playing as well as we want to play’, said the Spurs striker.
‘Now that’s all we can fight for [top four] so that’s going to be the goal and hopefully we can achieve it. But surely it is not enough for this club.
Spurs were booed at half time and full time and their wait for a trophy since 2008 will continue until next season. And Kane admitted that he understood the fans’ frustrations.
‘They have the right to express their opinion. The last week especially hasn’t been good enough,” Kane said. “Before the game against Sheffield United, the season could have been very different.
Harry Kane believes settling for a top-four finish ‘isn’t good enough’ for the struggling team
Tottenham delivered a flat display against AC Milan in the round of 16 as they were knocked out of the Champions League to extend their 15-year trophy drought.
“You go through there, you carry that momentum into the league game (at Wolves) and this game. But I feel like last week’s loss put a dagger in our hearts and we haven’t really recovered from that.
Spurs were knocked out of their second competition in a week after the FA Cup loss to Sheffield United and Antonio Conte’s side were flat against a well-organized Milan side. The home side rarely threatened and were guilty of falling behind and showing little urgency until the closing stages.
‘It has been a very hard week. We have lacked quality at key moments against teams against whom we have had good chances. Not just opportunities where you’re one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but opportunities where you’re in a good position on the pitch.
“We need more from all of us: to be more direct, more clinical,” Kane added. “The last three games we haven’t scored a goal and that’s not enough.”
Kane believes Spurs are “missing something”, revealing that their FA Cup exit against Sheffield United was a “stab into our hearts”.
With Conte’s contract due to expire at the end of the season and no indication yet that he intends to stay in north London, Kane admitted Spurs lacked the mentality to compete with the best teams in Europe.
The England captain and record scorer for Spurs turns 30 this year and rumors that he will move on will only grow if Spurs fail to reach the Champions League next season.
‘That is his (Conte’s) decision, he will be the one who makes that decision (to stay or not). All we can do as players is try to perform for him and work as hard as we can. That’s what we’re doing. We’re trying, but we’re missing something,” Kane added.
We have already talked about mentality and that ruthless hunger to be better, to be one of the best teams in Europe. We haven’t found that yet.
The striker was coy about Antonio Conte’s future, saying it was “his decision” if he stayed.
