Melbourne hospitals hit by IT outage that triggered a ‘code yellow’ emergency: staff ‘cannot access emails or patient medical records’

  • Employees do not have access to emails or patient records
  • Hospitals say there is no evidence of a hack

An IT outage causes disruptions at two major Melbourne hospitals.

Computer systems went down at Box Hill Hospital and Angliss Hospital, triggering a ‘code yellow internal emergency’ statement.

Daily Mail Australia understands that staff do not have access to their emails, telephones or patient medical records.

“The issue was caused by a critical core switch failure that we are currently trying to resolve,” Eastern Health said in a statement.

Eastern Health says there is no evidence of a cyberattack at this stage.

Hospital systems have reverted to downtime procedures and business continuity plans have been put in place.

“We will continue to update our staff, patients and healthcare partners as the situation unfolds.”

The outage affects Eastern Health, which cares for the two hospitals.

It also operates Maroondah and Ferntree Gully hospitals, but it is unclear if they are affected.

The company had to fall back on “downtime processes,” which basically means they use a manual pen and paper registration system.

There is no access to some critical scans and it has been suggested that all elective surgeries may be put on hold.

People who need to visit the hospital on Thursday morning are urged to call ahead before attending.
