Borussia Dortmund star Emre Can RAGES at the referee after his side’s Champions League exit

‘I don’t give a ***! He was arrogant the whole game, it’s a scandal’: Former Borussia Dortmund Liverpool star Emre Can rages over Chelsea replay penalty winner and referee ‘scared and arrogant’

An enraged Emre Can lashed out at referee Danny Makkelie for his performance in Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League knockout at the hands of Chelsea, calling the result ‘outrageous’.

The Blues trailed 1-0 from the first leg in Germany but were relentless in their efforts to turn a deadlock in west London, a Raheem Sterling goal in the first half and a repeated Kai Havertz penalty earning a deserved 2- 0 win

But Havertz’s repeat penalty was a major point of contention for the Dortmund players, after Salih Ozcan was deemed to have invaded when the first penalty was taken.

Can and company argued that Ben Chilwell was also guilty of trespassing, but Makkelie stood by his original decision to retake the penalty, leading Can to launch a furious tirade at the referee in his post-match interview.

The former Liverpool midfielder could not keep his cool and is now at risk of being punished by UEFA after he blamed the match official for Dortmund’s round of 16 exit.

Can said after the game: ‘The referee. It was his fault today. How can the second penalty be given in the situation? How does it work? That just doesn’t work!

‘I don’t give a *** who got in there first. He was arrogant the whole game, that’s where it starts. We lost here undeservedly because of the referee.

The furious German also accused Makkelie of unequal treatment, sensationally claiming the 40-year-old was afraid of the Stamford Bridge crowd.

We play here at Stamford Bridge. Maybe he’s afraid of the fans, I don’t know’, sensationally stated Can. “But then UEFA should send another referee.”

Chelsea peppered Dortmund’s goal in the first period with Felix and Havertz close by, the latter hitting the post with a wicked shot late in the half.

Sterling’s 43rd-minute goal returned the raucous support of the crowd at Stamford Bridge before Havertz’s twice-taken penalty completed the turnaround, hitting the post for the first time before scoring on his second attempt.

Dortmund manager Edin Terzic felt his team’s VAR penalty for a handball against Marius Wolf was the decision that ultimately turned the tide against him.

“If a decision takes five or six minutes to let you know it hasn’t been an easy decision,” Terzic said.

‘I am the manager, I am responsible for the performances. But not because of the referee’s performance.

‘In both legs they were very tight matches. The inches decide if you will go to the next round. We’ve been unlucky at times, but this is part of the game.

‘We knew we would have to show two great performances. Both teams deserved to go through, but Chelsea scored twice, we didn’t, so we can’t complain about being out.”
