Fisherman’s very Australian reaction after he and his mates were pulled from the ocean clinging to an Esky when their boat sank

  • Four WA fishermen sent a distress call to the police
  • One man had a very Australian concern when he was rescued

A fisherman clinging to an Esky in the middle of the ocean reacted very Australian when he and his mate were pulled from the water by his rescuers.

“The other Eskys have beers in them,” he said, followed by a sigh. “It’s just ice and bloody bait.”

Two other men on board were also rescued separately in the operation after fishermen sent out a distress call at around 7:25am on Sunday when their boat began to sink about 300m off Garden Island in Western Australia.

About 15 minutes after the boat capsized, the marine police and lifeboats arrived on the scene.

At that point, the four fishermen were already in the water, with the bow of the boat just visible above the waterline.

Bodycam footage taken by the rescuers shows the moment they arrive on scene to see two men in life jackets floating in the water.

The pair were helped aboard the boat before the rescue team found the other two.

“We’ve got two on board and we’ll be on our way in seconds to get the other two,” you hear one of the officers say.

Not long after, the two other men were found with their arms clamped to a huge bright green Esky.

The officers helped them onto the boat before they fished the Esky out of the water and lugged it onto the boat.

Police checked the condition of the lucky men and told them to sit down.

None of the four fishermen, who spent about half an hour in the water, were seriously injured.

The sea rescue service towed their sunken ship back to shore.
