“I’m not the housekeeper, I just clean up after the kids and I, do the dishes, the laundry and just pick ourselves up,” she explained.

However, she clarified that if she’s just looking at one baby, she’s offering more because it’s a “little bit different.”

A major annoyance for Braonain is when families won’t allow her to take the kids out of the house.

“I will not work for a family that won’t let me take the kids, I personally don’t know how to entertain your kids in the house for 10 hours and the kids and I will lose our minds,” she said.

She explained that many families have this rule and she had tried before but ended up quitting her job because it was too hard.

Another rule of hers is that she refuses to adjust her rates to the needs of the family.

“I will find someone who will pay me what I earn,” she said.

She also won’t mind extra people, including friends or family’s children, unless she gets paid more.

Another no-no is being paid late.

“It’s just disrespectful in all honesty and a lot of nanny families do it and I’ve been through it so many times,” she said.

Her last rule is that she does not work outside of working hours.

“It’s my free time, bye,” she said.

Hundreds of other nannies agreed with Braonain, explaining how difficult it can be to maintain strict boundaries at work.

The six rules a professional babysitter swears by:

1. Only clean up messes made by you and the kids that you pay attention to.

2. Don’t work for families that don’t allow the kids to leave the house.

3. Don’t change your rates to meet the needs of the family.

4. Don’t look at extra kids, including children of friends or relatives, unless you get paid more.

5. Don’t accept being paid late.

6. Don’t work outside office hours.

“I agree 100 percent. I had a family of three kids and mom wanted me to have a playdate, which means I’d babysit seven kids in total,” said one woman.

“Currently a nanny struggling with boundaries and my needs,” confessed another.

“I have so much trouble standing up for myself as a nanny. I know I deserve a raise for everything I do around the house, but I’m so scared to ask for one,” another agreed.

Braonain explained that it’s “hard” to learn to set boundaries, but after “being treated like shit for years”[she] Had enough.

“Be your own advocate, don’t be afraid to set boundaries,” she advised other struggling nannies.

Many applauded her for sticking to her rules.

“Sounds like healthy boundaries and knowing your worth to me,” said one woman.
