Canada’s male-to-female transgender prisoners are overwhelmingly murderers and sex offenders, alarming study shows

An alarming study by Canada’s department of prisons has revealed that nearly half of the country’s male-to-female trans inmates have a history of sexual offences.

Research from the Correctional Service of Canada (CRC) shows that 44 per cent of trans women in detention in the country have a history of sexual offences.

Even more concerning is how 71 percent of them were jailed for murder or sex crimes.

The study has fueled fears about the safety of native women detainees in Canadian lockups, who have to share cells and blocks with detainees who were male at birth.

Maxime Bernier, leader of the conservative People’s Party of Canada, called the policy “crazy.”

“These male rapists pretending to be women are sent to women’s prisons and are allowed to assault more women,” she posted on Twitter.

CRC studied all 99 gender-diverse inmates in the prison system between 2017 and 2020 for its 68-page report, called the Gender Diverse Offender Examination.

Some 61 of them were found to be male-to-female transitions. They had an average age of 43 years and about half of them were indigenous Canadians.

Most of them had been convicted of violent crimes, including murder, sexual offences, robbery, and assault.

In most cases, they had committed these crimes as men, prior to transition.

Their victims were mostly women and children, who usually suffered death or serious harm, investigators said.

Heather Mason, a former Canadian detainee who campaigns for traditional single-sex prisons, said: “Basically, trans prisoners are more likely to be the most dangerous.”

In 2017, Canada began housing trans people detained in facilities that matched their gender identity, not their biological sex.

That policy was supported by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Since 2022, requests from trans inmates to change facilities have been reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Among Canada’s historic male-to-female trans detainees is Catherine Lynn, who while identifying as a man in 1995 murdered an upstairs neighbor and had sex with her corpse.

Lynn was reportedly housed at the Grand Valley Institution Women’s Prison in Kitchener, Ontario.

Similarly, Adam Laboucan, a pedophile who raped a three-month-old baby, was granted permission to move into a women’s ward at the Fraser Valley Institution after transitioning in prison to a woman, Tara Desousa.

Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada, said allowing “male rapists posing as women” to serve their sentences in women’s prisons is “insane.”

Trans rights groups say trans people in detention are often victims of abuse and all deserve protection. Male-to-female trans detainees in all-male prisons are at great risk of violence and often trade sex for protection.

Women’s rights groups in the US and Canada say more and more male-to-female trans detainees are serving time in women’s prisons, despite rising incidents of rape and other horrors in what was once they were female-only cell blocks.

They point to a Swedish study from 2011which found that people who transition from male to female retain a “male level of criminality,” meaning they are more likely to commit crimes, including violent crimes, than women, even after taking hormones or undergoing a surgery.

Apparently, the American public is against allowing trans women into women’s prisons. A March 2021 poll of 3,500 voters found that 48 percent opposed trans women sharing cells with native women, while 34 percent approved.
