Tom Mitchell has taken to social media to share his heartbreak after his beloved pet, Macy, died following a “freak accident.”
Mitchell, a Brownlow medalist, has revealed how he held his golden retriever in his arms as she lay dying in a park in Melbourne.
“Best memories of the last 4 years,” Mitchell posted on Instagram.
‘Nala (Mitchell’s other golden retriever) and I are heartbroken after a freak accident at the park.
“Grateful to hold her for her last 10 seconds before she died in my arms.”

The Brownlow medalist took to Instagram to share his heartbreaking news.
The AFL star thanked fans for their support and said his other mascot, Nala, is out of sorts.
Mitchell added that his new Collingwood teammates tried to help during the ordeal, but nothing could be done as he watched Macy die.
“Many thanks to (ruckman) Darcy Cameron and (former Port Adelaide and Adelaide player) Billy Frampton for helping me try to save her,” he wrote.
Mitchell later thanked her fans for their support in a post to her Stories, saying that Nala has been “remarkably affected” by the loss.
“Thank you all for your messages of support in the last few days, it means a lot,” he added. ‘The trauma of what happened will be there for a while.
‘Nala is noticeably shaken. She cries at night and keeps looking around the house for Macy during the day if anyone has experienced this with a dog before.
“This is what Macy would be doing right now if she was still with us.”
RSPCA Victoria said: ‘Tom, we are very sorry and saddened to hear of your loss.
‘Macy couldn’t have been paired with a better human and doggo brother.
“Thinking of Macy and you and Nala during this time.”
