Erik ten Hag became the first Manchester United manager since Jose Mourinho to win a trophy in his debut season after his team beat Newcastle 2-0 to lift the Carabao Cup on Sunday.

It’s United’s first trophy in six years and Ten Hag is convinced he can inspire his team to win even more.

With the Dutchman setting high standards from the start, there are rising expectations about what he can achieve at Old Trafford. But what have other trophy-winning coaches done in their first seasons in charge? sports mail check out…

Jose Mourinho – League Cup, Premier League (Chelsea), League Cup (Manchester United), Serie A (Inter Milan), UEFA Conference League (Rome)

Ten Hag follows in the footsteps of a man who knows all about winning a trophy in his first season. Mourinho completed a League Cup and Premier League double with Chelsea in the 2004-2005 season, his first at Stamford Bridge.

He also accomplished the same feat at Inter Milan, winning Serie A and the Italian Super Cup in the 2008-09 campaign and at Roma he won the first UEFA Conference League in his debut season.

Mourinho is in his second campaign with Roma, which is fourth in Serie A but very close to the two Milan clubs. It remains to be seen if the Portuguese boss has one more big move in him or if a move to international football could be on the cards.

Mikel Arteta – FA Cup (Arsenal)

It seems a long time since Mikel Arteta was holding the FA Cup trophy to an empty Wembley after beating Chelsea in the delayed 2020 final.

Arteta joined the Gunners mid-season after Unai Emery was sacked and quickly won over the crowd with his first silverware in three years.

But it was far from easy in his first two full seasons in charge, as Arsenal missed out on the Champions League with eighth and fifth places.

Now, however, Arteta looks to be on his way with the Gunners at the top of the Premier League table and on track for their best season in a long time.

Kenny Dalglish – First Division, FA Cup (Liverpool)

Few great players make great managers, but Kenny Dalglish is a rare example.

The Scotsman assumed the role of player-manager at Liverpool following the resignation of Joe Fagan. Despite the club struggling off the pitch, Dalglish guided the Reds to a memorable double, beating Merseyside rivals Everton by two points in the League and by a 3-1 margin in the final of the FA Cup.

Dalglish won many more trophies with Liverpool before guiding Blackburn to a shock Premier League title win in 1995. Dalglish returned to Liverpool in 2011 for one season, winning the League Cup to give the club its first trophy. in six years.

Juande Ramos – League Cup (Tottenham)

Tottenham were in the relegation zone when Juande Ramos arrived in October 2007, so to win a League Cup after just four months in charge was impressive.

But it would be the only trophy Ramos would achieve at Spurs, as the Spaniard was sacked the following year after the club’s worst start to a Premier League season.

Ramos went on to manage Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Málaga, but failed to win a silver medal at any of the four clubs. Similarly, Tottenham have failed to win a trophy since Ramos’ departure.

Thomas Tuchel – Champions League (Chelsea)

He may have joined in the middle of a season after Frank Lampard’s sacking, but Thomas Tuchel won arguably the biggest prize of all just five months into his spell as Chelsea manager.

But after his initial success, Tuchel lost the League Cup and FA Cup finals against Liverpool in his first full season and a poor start to this term led to his dismissal in September.

Tuchel has since been linked with jobs in the Premier League and abroad, but remains jobless.
