‘The first one is in, but three remain’: Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst says the Red Devils are ‘hungry for more success’ after their Carabao Cup triumph, as Erik ten Hag’s side chase a unprecedented quadruple

  • Ten Hag’s team beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup on Sunday
  • The Red Devils follow with an outside shot to win the quadruple

Wout Weghorst believes lifting the Carabao Cup has whetted Manchester United’s appetite for more trophies this season as Erik ten Hag’s side chase a quadruple.

United beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley on Sunday to claim Ten Hag’s first piece of silverware since joining the club 10 months ago and the club’s first in six years.

They will return to action in the FA Cup at the home of West Ham on Wednesday night and then take on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday looking to keep up with Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. United already have a place in the Europa League round of 16 reserved after eliminating Barcelona.

“We’ve won the first one now and there are three to go, so we’re hungry for more,” Weghorst said. Now there are three left. The first one is inside and first we have to sit still and enjoy it. But then, of course, three are missing. We have everything in our own hands, so let’s go.

‘There is a great feeling within the club, within the team, the boys together. Of course, the coach was the first to always say, “we are living to win”.

He’s living for it. you can feel it It’s really detailed, the way he works, the way we work every day, every game.

We are very happy that we were able to win this one. It’s just a great feeling. I haven’t been here for long, but I think that for the club we’ve been winning trophies for a long time. It’s good to have him back where he belongs. It is an incredible club.

United’s Carabao Cup success was also a personal triumph for Weghorst, on loan from Burnley, who collected the first trophy of his career.

“In the Netherlands I played in two cup finals and I lost them both,” added the Dutch striker.

‘This was the third time and that’s something special. You put all the hard work and effort to really achieve something in your head. So, yes, it’s personal for me too and it’s very good to win a trophy.”

Weghorst helped set up Marcus Rashford’s second goal having tested Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius with a first-half 25-yard effort.

As the United players celebrated afterwards, he squatted in front of the United fans at Wembley and tried to take it all in.

“I just took a moment,” he admitted. I can do it really hard or really cool, but yeah, for me this is a childhood dream.

‘A childhood dream to play for this incredible club, play in a final and also be important in this final with the second goal.

‘You have to take a minute, otherwise it will all be over before you know it and before you’ve enjoyed it. So I took a moment there and that was the best moment of the night.
