‘I want more, much more’: Bruno Fernandes says first trophy for Manchester United an ‘incredible’ feeling, but says club is striving for more success

  • Man United claimed the first trophy of the season by beating Newcastle at Wembley
  • Goals from Casemiro and an own goal allowed the club to win their first trophy in six years
  • Bruno Fernandes said that he and his teammates now strive for more

Bruno Fernandes described the feeling of winning his first trophy as a Manchester United player as ‘incredible’, but stressed his desire to be more successful.

The Portuguese captained the team when they beat Newcastle United in the first national final of the season at Wembley.

Goals from Casemiro and an own goal from Sven Botman six minutes apart allowed Erik ten Hag’s side to clinch the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to Sky Sports on the pitch immediately after the win, Fernandes said they had been “looking for this moment” and now they had it, they wanted “more”.

“We have been looking for this moment, us, the fans and the club,” he said. We are all together and we finally got our trophy, I think we deserve it.

Bruno Fernandes lifted the trophy together with club captain Harry Maguire after beating Newcastle United 2-0.

It’s been an incredible period (so far this season), but we want and need more, it’s not enough for this club.

I am satisfied, because now I have my trophy, but I want more and we want more.

United entered the game as favourites, having enjoyed a brilliant start to the calendar year, perhaps best exemplified by their thrilling victory over Barcelona on Thursday night.

In front of a raucous Wembley Stadium, they allowed their comparatively superior experience in such big matches to shine, gained through the likes of Rapahel Varane and Casemiro, two players who have enjoyed notable success elsewhere.

Under pressure for much of the second half, United’s defense held its own and could have added more goals, notably through Fernandes himself late in added time.

Ten Hag’s team is still in contention for three more trophies this season. They advanced to the round of 16 of the Europa League, while next week they face West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The Premier League title remains a possibility as Ten Hag’s side are eight points behind leaders Arsenal, having played as many games.

The Dutchman, also speaking to Sky Sports after the match, said his players could take “inspiration” and “confidence” from victory.
