A female police officer who single-handledly faced off with a gang attacking a man ‘like a pack of wild animals’ has been commended for her bravery.

Clare Larkey-Jones, 48, stepped into the middle of the gang attack in Caernarfon, north Wales, after spotting the commotion as she returned home from an 11-hour shift.

The victim, in his 20s, was being badly beaten before the mother-of-three pulled away the 19-year-old ringleader Callum Lee Davies.

PC Larkey-Jones said she stepped up because ‘it was the right thing to do’. After the gang fled, she stayed with the victim and phoned an ambulance.

PC Larkey-Jones told Daily Post: ‘I had just finished an 11-hour shift and was picking my brother and his girlfriend up at The Maes in Caernarfon before going home when I heard a lot of shouting. I told my brother to stay in the car and I walked over and a gang of lads were picking on a young man in his 20s.

‘They were like a pack of wild animals and started beating him up. They stopped when I came over but then they started again.

‘I just went on auto-pilot and got hold of the ring-leader, shouted at them and pulled him off before they ran away and then called the police and ambulance.’

The case was later heard before Mold Crown Court, in which it was revealed PC Larkey-Jones grabbed ringleader Callum Lee Davies while he was in ‘mid punch’

The victim of the attack was taken to hospital with a 3cm cut to his face as well as bruising and swelling to his eye.

At the time of sentencing, Lee Davies was already serving a prison term and was sentenced to a further 12 months’ imprisonment for assault.

During sentencing, Judge Nicola Jones said PC Larkey-Jones ‘with no thought for her own safety, was clearly thinking only of restoring order and protecting the victim of the assault when she intervened’.

‘She got in the middle of all these men who were behaving violently. She very clearly and robustly sent everybody on their way,’ the judge said.

The judge thanked PC Larkey-Jones, who was present in court at her request, on behalf of the people of Caernarfon.

Judge Jones said: ‘I wanted to thank you and commend you for your bravery that night. I’ve seen what this man is capable of in relation to other offences and had you not intervened, there’d have been a very real risk of more serious injury to [the victim] and certainly a real risk of more public disorder.’
