A lawyer who has been promoted three times in three years has shared the two different types of employees and why one will always be promoted over the other.
Aleks Nikolic, 27, of Sydney, was in $3,000 worth of credit card debt when he tackled his bad spending habits and was on his way to building an impressive $180,000 net worth by age 26.
Aleks recently shared a clip on instagram highlighting the difference between ‘strategic’ and ‘tactical’ workers.

‘There are two types of people in the workplace. Are you a strategic or tactical worker? Alex asked. ‘Strategic workers are promoted. This is why,’
Aleks described tactical workers as ‘grinders’:
‘They’ll get more work done faster and this used to be me. You would always ask yourself: Why am I not promoted?
The reason they weren’t promoted, Aleks said, was because they weren’t solving the “real needs” of the company.
Strategic workers, on the other hand, “focus on the issues behind that job.”
‘For example, a strategic problem in the team may be that there is too much workload against resources. A strategic solution to that problem could be to make self-service part of that job so customers don’t even need to go near your team.’
Aleks said that if you feel like you’re not being promoted, you should focus on “strategic solutions” to problems and figure out what your team, business and managers’ problems are and solve them first.
“Discuss the reason behind the work and what can be done to simplify, automate, delegate or prioritize to make your team more efficient,” he said.
“It’s hard for management to ignore someone who has moved the needle and transformed the way work is done.”
Aleks (pictured) said that ‘tactical’ workers are grinders who just get things done quickly, while ‘strategic’ workers seek to solve problems and are therefore promoted further.
Hundreds of people who saw Aleks’ clip were quick to thank him for sharing his wisdom, writing “OMG I’m a pinwheel.”
“I want to unpack this more for different industries, I think it would be very eye opening,” wrote one woman.
“I guess it really depends on the industry, privileged situation, and how willing/informed an employer is about how they look at how each individual within that business operates,” added another.

Aleks said her manager encouraged her to think about the “strategic differences” she makes in the workplace and what kind of legacy she was creating to achieve career success.
“This is career advice that has changed my life and I think has contributed to a complete overhaul of my career,” Aleks posted on Instagram.
“I’ve been promoted three times in three years, so I think it works.”
The 27-year-old said that although she used to think that doing her job “but faster” was the key factor for a promotion, she was “completely wrong”.
“I’m on a team of very smart, very high-achieving people, so doing more work doesn’t really mean that much,” Aleks said.
‘Then my manager asked me something. He said: “What is its impact?”
“And by that he meant what are you doing that you think is a legacy or what are you doing that makes a significant change to the strategic issues rather than your tactical wins, which is just doing your job faster.”
Aleks said that when he realized this, it “changed the whole game” and that he has seen increasing professional success.
