A cabin crew member, just 24 years old, died unexpectedly from “sudden adult death syndrome” after the plane landed at Stansted airport, an inquest has heard.

Greta Dyrmishi was a staff member working for the airline Air Albania when she suddenly collapsed and passed away in December.

An autopsy found the 24-year-old cabin crew member had died from “sudden adult death syndrome” and was treated by paramedics after reports that a woman was seriously ill.

The Essex Coroner’s Court heard today that Ms Dyrmishi was traveling from the Albanian capital Tirana to Essex on December 21 when she suddenly collapsed.

First aid and CPR were provided, but Ms. Dyrmishi could not be saved and paramedics confirmed that she was deceased.

Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, also known as Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) is “when someone dies suddenly and unexpectedly from cardiac arrest, but the cause of the cardiac arrest cannot be found.” according to the British Heart Foundation.

It affects around 500 people in the UK each year and can be the result of an inherited heart condition, which can lead to SADS if left undetected and untreated.

The East of England Ambulance Service Trust said two ambulances, a dangerous area response team vehicle, an ambulance officer’s vehicle and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance responded to reports of a seriously ill woman.

Michelle Brown, the Essex area coroner, said Greta’s death would be subject to a full desk inquiry.

Coroner Brown said: “This 24-year-old female was a cabin crew member on a flight from Albania and was on the tarmac when she appeared to pass out and was given basic first aid.”

‘Ten minutes later there was no pulse and CPR began. Paramedics attended to her and confirmed that she had passed away.

She added: ‘[At the time of the incident,] she was out front by the doors of a plane at Stansted airport. This is suitable for a documentary investigation in due time of it.

A statement issued by Air Albania at the time of Greta’s death read: “On December 21, after disembarking the passengers from our flight to London, one of our cabin crew, Greta Dyrmishi, suffered a heart attack.

“Even after all medical assistance was provided immediately, we lost it.

“She was taken to London hospital and procedures are being followed. From the first moments, Air Albania was in contact with his family and we continue to be close to them in these difficult times.

“Regarding Greta and her family, we decided to share the news with the public at the appropriate time.

‘We will always remember Greta as a passionate professional, an excellent colleague and a great friend to all of us.

‘May God have mercy on her and give peace to the family. Air Albania will continue to be with his family.”
