King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is “fine” after undergoing a planned surgical procedure “in the area of the heart,” the Swedish Royal Court said on Monday.
The court had announced the procedure last week, describing it as “laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery in the area of the heart” that had been recommended by King’s 76-year-old doctor.
In a statement after the scheduled procedure on Monday morning, the royal household said the surgery “went as planned and the king is doing well.”
He added that the King, who is celebrating 50 years on the throne this year, was grateful for “all the support and warmth shown to him and is grateful for Swedish medical care.”
The official announcement did not elaborate on the nature of the surgery. The king, a third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, is not known to have had surgery for a serious ailment before.

After the operation, the monarch will take a period of rest, so his commitments scheduled for this month and until March 3 will be postponed until late spring.
The king ascended the throne on September 15, 1973, and is Sweden’s longest-reigning monarch.
The Swedish royal family is very popular in Sweden and the monarchy enjoys wide support.
Throughout the year, the country’s Royal Family will organize a series of events to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of King Charles.
Born on April 30, 1946, Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus Bernadotte was nine months old when his father, Prince Gustaf Adolf, died in a plane crash in Denmark.

He assumed the throne after the death of his grandfather, the reigning Gustaf VI Adolf.
King Charles and his wife of 47 years, Queen Silvia, share three children: Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, 45, Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Duke of Värmland, 43, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, 40.
Viewed as a progressive monarch, King Carl insisted that Swedish law be changed in 1979 to allow his eldest daughter to succeed him in place of his only son, and the UK followed suit in 2011.
