Aldi plans to double its London stores and create 2,400 jobs as it battles Big Four rivals

Aldi is doubling down on its presence in London as it ramps up its battle against the ‘big four’ rivals.

The German retailer said it wanted to expand its 60-car station wagon into the M25, creating 2,400 jobs in the process.

It looks at empty office buildings, new housing estates and locations near city centers, both for the bread-and-butter 20,000 square foot stores and the smaller format of 5,000 square foot local stores.

The supermarket already employs around 40,000 people in the United Kingdom.

Aldi is looking for stores across the country, but with a particular focus on London. Ben Shotter, the store’s regional director, said: ‘We are looking for locations in the UK, but particularly in London.’

The expansion comes as Aldi is reaping the rewards of Brits turning to cheaper brands amid the cost of living.

Morrisons lost its spot as the UK’s fourth largest grocer to Aldi last year.

Aldi posted sales of £3.1 billion in the three months to January 22, up 26.9 per cent from a year earlier.
